How long does it take to remove personal plate?

I'll phone the Edinburgh DVLA office tommorow and find out whether they can do it there and then.

i dont think i have the old number plates anymore so i'll have to get them made up again - i thought it would be a different (random) number that goes back on.

thanks for the useful info guys.... sounds like i better do it quick

takes around 2weeks i believe, costs about £130

Whilst the will transfer will happen quickly - in the old days there and then - the V5 could take ages to come through.

Best not to sell the car until the revised V5 is in your hands - DVLA used to advise the same.

I sold my last car on 7 December if memory serves - a few years ago - and the chap that bought it did so on the understanding that I would not release the car until the V5 came back. I advertised it to test the water and almost immediately had a buyer!!

Anyway the Christmas period slowed things down even more than usual and in the end it was a good way through January before the V5 was on the door mat.

Dazzlers tip of the day: If you're definitely selling, transfer the reg to retention as soon as possible.

Hello,

You can no longer do it over the counter here in Chester (which I think now covers Liverpool as their office has closed).

£105 to transfer £25 or retention.

Agree with above if you are thinking of selling your car then get the paperwork etc done first, then you get the new tax disc and the V5 all correct and with the correct plates etc.

all matches up everyone happy job done.

Dundee DVLA do it over the counter.

Not anymore they dont. :(

They are my local office and told me they couldn't do anything over the counter in relation to reg transfers or cherished numbers when I turned up at the begining of November to juggle a few numbers around.

Once you have all your papers the transfer can be done over the counter, did this a couple of months ago at P'boro......don't know about getting the plate off other than B'ham office taking three weeks to do this..again a couple of months ago.

Once you've paid the DVLA then you have the original Reg Number back on the car, you will need to notify your insurance company of the change. Your insurance company may then levy a fee for a documention change/administration costs

£105 all in, retention £25 and £80 to transfer

hi

I just phoned up DVLA and they tell me i can 'initiate' the number plate transfer/retention at one of their local offices (edinburgh) and then it will take around 7 working days for the new info (logbook etc) to come back.

I'll try tommorow anyhow.

thanks

derek

Did the process on Monday (Wimbledon DVLA). They have to send the information to Swansea. It takes 7 working days for collection for your new Registration and Tax disc.

Sorry Malcolm "£105 all in, retention £25 and £80 to transfer"

I pay £25 per year each to keep a few numbers on retention that's what I meant to say...

I'm even considering buying a plate for our daughter who is 9 months old...

My mistake - it was Aberdeen :o .

Buy her gold instead.

In 1971 I was left five hundred quid in a will - at that time it was around 10% of a nice three bedroomed house in Colindale (Colindale was nice then) - the same house now is half a million. In 1985 I bought my first flat and "my inheritance" was released, it wouldn't have even paid for the stamp duty .

My Mother in her wisdom tried to do the same thing for my kids (she meant well) at the worlds crappiest local building society paying about 1.5% PA and whilst I couldn't stop her (she is rather like the QEII drawing into port) - all the money that the kids get goes in my pocket and I buy gold every time I go to Dubai and the rate is good .
