Just wondering how many mechanics are on here? I know nothing about engines what so ever.......except Diesel goes in one end and I drive the other end......lol

My dad has been a mechanic all his working life. He's in his 80's now and still at the garage every day. As I've been around him for 40 odd years I've done my fair share of engine rebuilds etc.
It does seem the old school mechanic is kind of left behind somewhat nowadays with everything being down to needing a machine to tell you what's wrong.
When I was a kid, I can remember my old man taking the sump off the car and removing two pistons and rods by the side off the road because the car was knocking. After putting everything back together we limped to our destination on two cylinders lol. Try doing that with a car nowadays
I have looked in at my engine, but to me It looks more like a unit, would I be right in that assumption?
I did an engineering apprenticeship back in the 70's and did my first crank regrind when I was 16. Until my most recent car I was confident to tackle almost anything including the fuel injection and early fault code systems. The latest cars are so complex and need such a broad span of skills and exclusive software tools it now seems impossible.
No offence intended but I have to wonder if an MB Technician can do everything on the car these days or have individuals now had to specialise in certain aspects.
