The bargain C180 I've just bought has some naff used car dealer plates on it, and they're looking a little worse for wear.

I'd quite like to get some new plates made up at the local MB dealer, complete with those fancy MB stainless steel screws (four per plate!!) and the writing at the bottom that will say Mercedes Benz "dealer location",

Am I looking to get absolutely shafted or worse, laughed at for going to the dealer for reg plates?

I think I paid about £35 for the pair in Halfords recently for another car.

Thats really cheap.....£19.99 in my shop for just a rear....we dont do fronts!!...free to me though!! Even at Halfords they are £18 each....and they are horrible!!

I have bought a few from this eBayer. Great quality and £16. Free fitting kit, postage and good service:

No just the price. I don’t get any special discounts from the dealer I use now, they’re just extra helpful.
That's silly cheap. I'll find out what my local charges and update on here.

August 2017, BMW Liverpool charged me £16.44 for a pair of plates for my 5 Series
Probably double that now 🤣

How can you not do fronts?

I've never been too comfortable with reg plates online, you gotta show proof of V5 right? I suppose they look like a reputable seller. Their company name isn't too bad...

Having private plates on both my cars and changing both cars quite regularly, I have done this many times. This supplier accepts emailed photos of the V5 and a utility bill so the process is quick and simple.
It certainly works well for me even if I have to collect them from my own front door and fit them. I can at least ensure they are fitted straight and level 😂

Never had to do that before! Still get 100% legal plates too.
Been a legal requirement since 2001. You obviously use a dodgy source for you plates! Proof of ownership...usually V5.... and proof of ID....usually licence or passport...is mandatory. And since we can't except photo copies (the DVLA rules stipulate originals only) most of the online guys must bend the rules too.....or sell them as "show plates"....an easy loop hole to use.

Yes, I suppose the online seller can say he has seen the originals (online!) and not copies....:dk:

I don't think....we can't accept scans online etc.

They state in the advert proof is needed, but if you don't provide it, they dont ask for it again. The plates will still be sent and will be 100% legal.
Other companies may differ.

Just taken a look at Halfords as they are the ones I use at the current price is £36.

I am quite happy with the bog standard plates these days but back in the day I had plates given to me as a pressie which had a photo image head shot of one of my Black Great Danes either end of my reg number and had that for the longest time. I must admit to not being all that keen on the 4D type though, just another place to catch debris I'm thinking, but each to their own as always.

I've never had any complaints with Halford's but probably the main reason for going there is convenience.

The other thing I have on just the Merc is Wurth plate holders and while I like them, you will no doubt get plenty of folks that don't. I found them a cinch to fit onto my car and just as easy to fit the metal plates I got from Halford's.

There are some thoughts that the Wurth holders make it easy for potential theft of plates, but to that I would say this: a potential thief would need the little key or home made device to gain access to the plate inside, I have personal plates which are more conspicuous and thus possibly less desirable for theft, and I believe it is just as easy if not easier to rip off a plate stuck on by adhesive pads, or to carry a double ended screw driver (flat head/pozi) used to remove plates held on by screws.

I will say this though, the original Wurth plates I bought can't be said to be cheap at £25, compared to the several makes out there built on the same lines that cost a lot less, but given mine have been on my motor 4 years so far, then to my mind they have paid for themselves already and have been well wUrth the original outlay... had to be done ;)
