OMG:eek:

I was driving to work on Friday and thought things were a bit sluggish. It ended up that 40mph with my foot flat on the floor was the best I could do so I thought I had better stop.

Called Mobliolife and they towed me to Huddersfield Merc complete with puzzled looks because everything appeared to be running fine - just no power...

Just had a call from the dealer telling me that the pre-cat (otherwise known as the catalytic converter that lives under the bonnet) has broken up damaging the cat that lives under the car...

Price to replace ... ~£1450 :eek: SWMBO will not be pleased...

A quick check of GSF car parts shows they can't help and I'm yet to ring Euro car parts.

Does anyone have any suggestions of who I can talk to to avoid this enourmous bill. I'm not aversed to putting the exhaust on myself if I can get the bits.

The other question - has anyone heard of this happening before, or I am just unlucky?

Thanks

Charlie

try an independent or after market exhaust house . there are lots of them around, about £250-£500.
May not sound the same or behave the same like the original merc, mine did not but its a case of what are you willing to spend. and from £1000 compared to £200 for a car my age, there was no comparison

CES uk is a good one http://www.cesuk.com

As Recycled says, or to get the best of both worlds, use an Indy to fit original parts. Have MB stated what the labour time is for doing the job?

MB have spent two hours diagnosing the fault, and will need one more to fit the parts.

Things have moved on a little since this morning, MB have agreed to make a reasonable contribution, so all things considered they're doing the job - particularly as the car isn't driveable right now.

Thanks for your posts.

Had my E55 MoT'd today and its emissions were just fine and always would be according to the garage owner, as the legal emissions limits are higher than the normal uncatalysed emissions. He thought a catalyser was a legal requirement regardless although others seem to think differently.
