Saturday afternoon idler pulley bearing failed in the Peak District. RAC flatbed to my indie. Monday he's checking prices with MB Derby for this:

Yes, that will be £388 with next day delivery.
Including VAT?
No, our prices are ex VAT. With VAT that will be £465.60.
Thanks but no thanks.
Local motor factor gets OEM part for £161 + VAT = £193.20.

Still bloody expensive for what it is but £272.40 saving.

Don't you hate being shafted?

When I need a part, I often ring the local dealer to get a price, but rarely buy from them; that's OE parts prices for you. Good on you for being shafted for less than half as much as you could have been.

Yep , I wonder how much it cost to replace the bearing on its own if it could be done - possibly no more than £20.

On a different "shafting" theme , just received a quote to square up the back garden. £10.5k , £8.5k of which is labour for 10 days - broken down that equates to £850 per day for two guys - £425 pp for a days labouring , I am definitely in the wrong profession.

No, you've been talking with comedians who double as labourers... ;)

A half price shafting?

There are actually two pullies on the same shaft. A metal one for the kompressor belt and a plastic one for the ancilliaries. The bearing failed in the metal one and can be replaced. A new bearing would have cost me less than £10. BUT you need to replace the plastic pulley at the same time! I must have spent an hour with the guy at the motor factors but we couldn't find that pulley. Now, I could have bought one from Ireland for £35 but the car was stripped down at my indie and we just wanted to get the job done.

And here is the culprit. Imagine the noise when this failed.
