How much?

I have the opportunity to use somebody to fix a couple of things on my car - nothing major but a few niggly things (my father managed to break the window switch, a squeak coming from the heater system in the passengers footwell and one half of the car's speakers not working).

For reasons I am not to go into on a public forum I am perfectly happy that the chap in question is capable of undertaking the work.

My question is how much to pay him. He usually does work for his mates at no cost (obviously parts being paid for, talking labour only here). However, I don't know him - his partner is a colleague of mine.

He is perfectly happy doing the work but it feels wrong to me to take advantage of somebody I don't know - i.e. I want to pay him something but don't really have a feel for what is fair.

If he did the work I would clearly have no warranty etc.

Anybody have any views on what would be an hourly rate?

If this person is not a trained mechanic and like you say there is no warranty on his work I would say £10 per hour, but I wouldn't pay more than £50 in total.

All money would be tax free and straight into the back pocket!

How about 24 cans of his favourite tipple. It would keep me happy for a while:D

If he was a fully time served vehicle mechanic, I would pay him slightly more than £10 per hour. £15 ?

I think pluggers was on the right line with his beer idea.

A bottle of single malt and/or some decent cigars could come to around £50 to £70 and would be a nicer thankyou than a bunch of grubby tenners.

Thanks guys - he is fully trained otherwise he wouldn't be going anywhere near my car!

You've given me a ballpark and a couple of different ideas which is what I wanted so thanks a lot.

My tenners are not grubby!

Ian - I think you're enjoying this question too much! I get the feeling you did 10 mins reseach 'just in case I asked'... ;)

Although I don't know him direct I get the feeling the equivalent value in beer is more up his street. I am with you, a nice whisky seems more appreciative but it he's not a whisky drinker...

Now to do 10 mins of my own research on that website.
