How Often Do You Service Your Merc?

According to the car computer...every 365 days, usually with 10'000 Klm's done. I use Total Quartz Inio MC 3 Long Life . which meets MB 291.52 spec. and usually MANN Oil filters. So far, no problem's.

I've my VW's oil to change this week after being in for a year , which in 7 years of ownership is the first annual change I'll have done as usually done every 6 months .

It won't be black though ,
egr disabled and able to suck out 300ml from oil cooler otherwise left in if solely sump plug drained and the high dose of LongLife oil dispersants and detergents have done their job with small mileage changes .

Gonna need photos of this oil . No googling allowed . Lol . Having the egr disabled would help i suppose.

Will do , here's what gets sucked out of the oil cooler accessed via the oil filter housing .

The only car I have driven that the oil was as clean as when it was put in was a petrol Vauxhall Vectra which was on LPG from new,with no carbon getting into the oil it always seemed a shame to change it.

There is one very positive ( or maybe not, as it hides an underlying fault in the engine) benefit to frequent oil change's,, that is where the oil level is rising due to diesel / other contamination? At least frequent oil changes reduces the the time the engine is running on diluted oil.

And here it is .

1 year and 2,866 miles .

Glad I checked as I found my coolant low again this time seeing coolant on the engine giving away the recently replaced coolant / breather pipe .

Plus oil spray from the poor VAG boost pipes that rely on small locating lugs and a clip .
To beef them up or a repair for a damaged lug a 2 jubilee and cable tie arrangement is wise .

After 100K they like to pop apart with a loud bang and black smoke out of the exhaust .

Lug has completely gone now , so loose even with the jubilee and ties .

I was given a scrap car that had a new boost pipe :)

Can plan tomorrow more effectively now !

An old 2001 - 2005 130 1.9 PD .

AWX or AVF ? I had an A6 with the AVF 1.9 TDI fitted....one of the very best engines ever made anywhere. Aside from regular oil / filter changes, 400ml 2T added when filling it with diesel, and it goes for ever. I always drained the oil via the sump stud, but sucking the residual oil out of the oil cooler is a new one for. Good tip.

AVF too .

400ml is alot .

10 Litre Diesel ---> 50 Ml.
20 Litre Diesel ---> 100 Ml
30 Litre Diesel ---> 150 Ml.
40 Litre Diesel ---> 200 Ml.
50 Litre Diesel ---> 250 Ml.
60 Litre Diesel ---> 300 Ml.
70 Litre Diesel ---> 350 Ml.
80 Litre Diesel ---> 400 Ml.
90 Litre Diesel ---> 450 Ml.
100 Litre Diesel ---> 500 Ml.

I tend not to brim because of the weight penalty , more happy with a 3/4 fill and add 40ml 2-EHN and roughly 200ml of 2T , premixed in used 250ml Redex bottles .

If I remember rightly, the tank on the A6 was 80 Litres, and while I would never drive it on or even remotely near empty.. 60-65 litres would be the norm, so not too far outside the limit. So for you, 40Ml 2-EHN added to 200 Ml of 2 T= 250 ( approx ) mixed into 3/4 full tank.. I must remember that. The A6 has long passed out of my ownership...was replaced 2 years ago with the Merc w212, and aside from adding 250 Ml of Diesel Red X to a full tank prior to going for it's NCT ( MOT) to "encourage" a good result ( it passed anyway ) I don't use any additives to the fuel in the Merc. Do you?

I do the same as because I have on it's own a set of results of Mot smoke opacity tests showing 2T halved it .

I won't 'feel' the smoothing results it usually has because I'm not going to where the Merc has twin Lanchester balancer shafts .

The twin lanchester balancer shafts did not work out too well in the early 2.0 VAG engines, was a bit of a disaster in them. I don't Mercedes will have make the same mistake

Yep know all about the planned obsolescence oil pump drive .

15mm of contact length into a non hexagonal bore with 6 tiny machined length grooves that accept the very shoulders of the hex bar is an engineering abomination and can only be described as it was designed to fail .

Hi guys!

I wonder how often you do basic servicing to your Mercs?

Do you wait the full 12k miles or 12 months - or do you do it more often???

What parts do you buy? - Geniune Merc, OE or cheapie parts ???
Buy oil from you and service at Merc independent specialist

Yes inserting a hexagonal shaft ( and very little of that ) into a splined tube was not only asking for trouble, but guaranteed it !! Frightening thought generally speaking, if pre-planned obsolescence is now the goal of manufacturers.

Lol , so much for the simple service and planned boost hose fix this afternoon...

Think I'll be driving the Merc tomorrow .

Hi everyone, I have a w245 and a w204 (OM640 and OM651, both diesel). I change the oil accordingly to the trips and usage, number of cold starts, stop&go traffic, dpf-regens, urban or not, etc. I don't exceed 5000 miles. The OM640 (euro5) has serious issues of diluting oil with diesel, so I change it even 3 times a year. I use Fuchs Titan GT1 Pro Flex 23 and Genuine oil filters. Bye!:)
