And what if you, as a private investor, had bought some VW shares impressed by their astounding price performance in an otherwise rotten market? This is exactly what Regulators and Market Transparency laws are supposed to prevent.

If that happened in the US those responsible could look forward to wearing fetching orange boiler suits and handcuffs.

One might wonder if the hedge funds ever read this.

this kind of behaviour is probably market abuse, which is unlawful

however, BAFIN (Germany's FSA equivalent) is not well known for effective enforcement, especially against those nasty hedge funds, which deserve their come uppance, having been beaten at their own game
