E300 Coupe 2019
Hi,

I recently purchased a 2019 e300 coupe, with the large dual displays, thinking CarPlay would come as standard, however upon receiving the car I have realised it does not. Does anyone know or have experience with getting it added on and any suggestions on how to do it?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Seeing as your car is still under warranty, I would start with your local MB dealer, see what they say. Perhaps it should have Apple CarPlay but it isn't activated etc, or they may quote you for adding it.

Then you could look at specialists. I am not familiar with Integrated Automotive UK, but looking at their website they are based in Leicester, so not too far away from you.

Alternatively there's Comand UK in Lightwater (SE) Mercedes Parts Specialists

There is a very good chance that your car can have factory CarPlay retrofitted. Send me your vin number to [email protected]

I’m assuming it’s not premium/premium plus, so has SD card based nav then? If so, I too would recommend Integrated Automotive, as your local dealer won’t be able to install it

You can probably get it sorted by contacting vladimircdi on ebay. He'll need your VIN number to check before he'll sell you a plug-in box. Worked for me, under £200 and took a minute to set up.

The OP's car is still under warranty... so not sure that uploading modified firmware to the infotainment system is a good idea. Also, the custom firmware eill get overwritten if the dealer ever upgrades the software on the infotainment unit (and the Apple CarPlay hack will be lost). So I wouldn't do that. My personal opinion...

Yes, this is true.
But the Mercedes dealer won't retrofit and anyone else who modifies the car would also negate the warranty.
If you told the dealer.
Other option is to suck it up and live without Android Auto / Carplay until it's out of warranty.
I go to an indie for servicing so they'll not upgrade the firmware without my say-so.
Regular software updates are fine.
Worth noting these caveats though.

Why do so many people want carplay?

it looks to me like a mirrored iPhone screen with mobile access to endless social media apps? What am I missing?

Waze. (or Apple Maps. or Google Maps). That's what you are missing...

If you drive in cities or just on busy roads, and your COMAND (or Becker Map Pilot or Garmin Map Pilot) does not have the TomTom Live Traffic (or perhaps you just don't want to pay £££ for it), then Waze is your friend.

That, and the ability to just listen to you Spotify playlist wuth no fuss and without having to fumble with Bluetooth audio streaming settings.

personally, I think that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are the future.

You have two of the world's biggest tech companies (by far) spending hundreds of man years and billions of dollars on developing competing OS and user interfaces.

And then you have over a dozen car manufacturers - who are not tech companies - trying to create their own infotainment system interfaces using small (in comparison) in-house teams. Or outsourcing it to the likes of Bosch etc.

I think it's about time that car manufacturers stopped trying to reinvent the wheel (each manufacturer developing their own version....), concede defeat, and just leave the development of the infotainment system interface to Apple and Android (Google).

Not strictly true.

If the retrofit is done correctly and properly, warranty is unaffected.

So you do a retrofit for the E Class that is approved and endorsed by Mercedes?

Yes. Any retrofit that is done using genuine Mercedes parts, and in accordance with their published procedures for doing so is covered under their warranty.

So do Mercedes have a published procedure for retrofitting Carplay / AA? Would love to see that documentation.
They said that it wasn't possible due to a wiring difference.
Yet it can be easily done with an obd box from eBay.
Why don't they just charge a couple of hundred pounds and do it themselves?
It would make disgruntled customers happy ones.
