Olly, Thank You Very Much !! Absolutely Brilliant mate !! I was planning to change mine next weekend so perfect timing. Exact same model too so perfect.
Thanks again :)

after lunch and a think my favourite next step is to either put more fluid in the pan ( it could be sucking on air because the front is up on ramps )
Lower the car to level ground and try again tho this means jacking it up and getting the stands under to deinstall the plumbing and restore the pipes

The fluid from the pipe stops flowing when the TC and pipework/cooler is empty. When you top up for the second time it re-fills.

Thanks again Olly, really useful info there, especially that the pan bolts are prone to snapping - I wasn't aware of that so will be extra careful on them - you probably saved me alot of grief :)
Just one question please; Are none of these 722.6 trans fitted with the TC drain plug as they used to be? Mine is a 2000 facelift w210 e320 estate with a 722.618 box fitted.
Thanks,
Lawrence

How do I find out what box I have??

Check your service book doesn't have a a blue & white data card glued into the last page, it should have the gearbox ('Getriebe' in German) listed beside row number '7' in the lefthand-most column. It should be a 14 digit number beginning 722####...
Cheers

These are the parts needed. ATF 000 98921 03 10. Dipstick, filter pipe and sump seals.

Raise the car up and drain the fluid from the gearbox sump pan. Use a 5 mm Allen key and tap it in with a hammer. They can be very tight.

Hi again Olly, is it ok to use this MB part number of ATF: A 001 989 68 03 13 ?? I wanted to check before using it as it differs to the number you posted. Thanks, Lawrence

Is that clearing the torque converter as well?
You still need to open the pan to channge the filter too?

Yes you would do this after changing the filter. For those with flexible hoses on the circuit then one would disconnect flex pipe No:14 from steel pipe No:8 (use spanners on both sides). You might have to remove the engine protector plate to access these pipes.

I changed ATF and filter exactly as demonstrated. The car drove perfectly for 5 miles. After breaking hard I lost all drive. Any ideas?

Really helpful & informative post, but in the end I just called PCS and booked mine in to have this done on the 30th!

Looking forward to seeing if I can notice any difference afterwards :)

how to change the automatic gearbox oil and flush on a 722.6 box

I took my car to PCS last week for Transmission oil change and Brake repairs.
The Transmission does change more smoothly and I now have piece of mind that its been done and more importantly its been done "PROPERLY".

Now we've had this done, I couldn't agree more; I've had auto transmissions in other cars serviced elsewhere before, but never has the outcome been as positive as our experience today.

Long may this remain the case!

automatic gearbox

I just tried to edit it. Too late. It should go in after cleaning the sump pan. Can the mods please edit it.

hi there im new to this and just got a 98 clk 230 komp auto i would like to know how much to have my auto box service fuild and filter fuild check etc many thanks from paul

I have taken my ML270 to two independant Merc garages this week and mentioned having the ATF changed. Both happy to do it and seem knowledgable but they both questioned resetting the adaptations using STAR. Is this a nessessary step? They can reset if I want them too but advised against it. Discuss :)

Brilliant write-up, and I reckon I can do a change myself. Just one small question, though; I have a 1998 E55,but alas! the service book is long gone. Will my car have the 722.6 'box, and will the TC have a drain plug?

Thank you in anticipation.

I had the pilot bushing replaced on my car today as it was leaking, i Had the oil checked in my gearbox by a MB specialist and they said the oil looks fine as the change was recent, as I have recently got mine I wanted the adaptations reset but I was strongly advised against it as it would shift very harshly until it sorted itself out again.

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this Olly :)

It will not shift harshly at all as long as its re-adapted properly.

Thanks for the reply Olly,

I was advised that if they reset the adaptations then they would need 2 hours to drive the car before they let me have it back.

Sounds a bit odd to me, unsurprisingly I left it :)
