We have had lots of discusions on the spring compressor but you can only do it safely with the proper one as BlackC55 has said.
I had a 201 about 6 years ago with a broken spring and the ordinary compressors won't fit there is not enough room to compress them.
The Haynes W/Shop manuel shows them in the book being used and because I tried and could not do it I emailed them and the reply was.QUOTE yes we realise that is the problem with the mercedes but due to the cost of the Mercedes ones we did not feel it was a diy. job.
I then replied and said I don't think it was very informative to shows one that don't work.
you can get away from using spring compressors for rear springs as you can use a tolley jack and slowly release them. For the fronts I would recommend proper merc spring compressors.
Here is a link for when I changed my springs on my W201, the procedure will be similar.
