My E430 (160k miles) had a slight oil leak from the crankcase breather gaskets and a couple of the coil packs have oily gunk on them, I am going to fix leak and fit new spark plugs soon and wonder what is the best way to clean the coil packs before re-fitting them, I'm guessing solvent based cleaners could liquify the gunk and maybe carry it into the electronics inside, any ideas?

Wd40.

Thanks for suggestions. No danger of solvents thinning the oil and allowing it to permeate into the electrikery inside?

WD40 is an insulator(will not conduct electricity)also a de-greaser,so a good flush will do the job. Brake clean is good for metal parts, but dries out rapidly which can leave a frozen on residue on plastics.
