How to connect to my network printer?

Hi,

I'm making a real hash of connecting a new laptop on to my home network printer. Can anyone help me please.

My printer is connected to my wi-fi router/modem with a RJ45 lead.
The printer IP is \\192.168.0.200 and it's name is HP4E3B5A and I think it's printing through port 9100..... though this means nothing to me, so could be wrong. The router IP is \\192.168.0.1 if that's any help.

In Windows XP when I go to 'add printer' I get the options of:

Browse for a printer
Connect to this printer Name: eg \\server\printer
Connect to a printer URL eg. http://server/printers/myprinter/.printer

In both the last two options I've tried entering the IP but this fails.

In a web browser I've tried http://192.168.0.200/ and that works fine, bringing up the printer status window.

Were am I going wrong?

Have a look here How to install a network printer on your home or office network . From memory these steps look about right.

I've got two network printers and its always a nightmare connecting them. I think one confusing thing is that you actually have to install them as local printers which seems counter-intuitive. Basically you need to kind of bind the printer port to a TCP-IP port.

You might need to use the install program on the printer CD and select network printer from the setup options.

If you're using IP printing to a network printer you have to set it up as a local IP port. Makes no sense but, hey, It's Windows

So add a local IP port with the IP address of the printer and print to that local IP port

It was as you suggested......I was trying to install it as a network printer, but actually it's defined as a local printer.....baffling.
