How to: Fit an Avantgard Grill on a w202 (Not the most difficult mod)

Time taken 15-20 Mins
Tools required:
-8mm Socket, Small Philips screwdriver

Parts required:
-Avantgard Grill £68+Vat from KMS , Grav888 or from MB £160ish

Ok, I am writing this guide AFTER I had installed the Avantgard grill, so for the first few shots it includes the Avantgard instead of the old one!

Removing the old grill
1:With the bonnet open, locate the 8 bolts (see Red dots), 2 ether side and 4 along the top - use an 8mm socket to unscrew them.

The 4 side ones are easy to remove (as long as they arent rusted like one of mine which was hell to remove!), the 4 along the top are in groups of 2 which also hold in a pair of plastic covers which will fall down - be ready to catch them!

2: With the bolts removed, gently tug the old grill out, carefully guide the bonnet handle through the vents.

3: Once its all clear of the car, place the grill face down and pull off the old clips and note their postions & keep them safe:

With all the clips off, remove the bottom screw in the centre

4: Pull out old grill from the metal surround - this can be a pain!

5: Now to fit the new grill, again this can be difficult to get the grill part into the metal surround, I recommend sliding it in from one of the sides.

Before you re-attach the clips, screw in the bottom Philips screw to insure the grill is centred correctly. Place clips back on (small on the sides, 4 big ones on the top.

Refitting
6: With the grill all back together, push it gently back onto the bonnet, (make sure to remember to feed to bonnet opening handle through the 2nd strip! - see below)

7: Screw all the bolts back in - remembering to include the 2 plastic covers.
If you cant work out which one goes on which side: (part numbers on them)

Drivers Side:
202 887 01 99
Passenger Side:
202 887 01 98

8: Close the bonnet and admire your much younger looking motor!

The oem grill is only £160ish from the stealership.

Totally original, in MB Sealed Box, with instructions and new clips.

Had mine from bluestar aswell £125 ,Just had the grill and instructions all sealed up in a cardboard box tho.
Can you get a black bonnet pull or do you have too stay with the one already fitted (grey in my case)?

Stay with what you have got - it is invisible (or should be !) when the bonnet is closed anyway. Why change it ?

Very Important Procedure to be done - I forgot about it when I installed my grill and only realised after slamming the bonnet shut..took me a good 45mins to get it out  ( installation was less than 20 mins )

Anyway made the car look better...also made some other W202 owners did a double take to find out what's different from their car. :D

How do you replace the grill and hood emblem on a W208 CLK?

Can anyone provide me with instructions for replacing the grill on a W208 CLK, and changing to a flat hood emblem?

Thanks.

w202 Avantgarde Grill from dealer is £145+vat (£170ish) part no B66880127

Can anyone advise wether this is the complete grill...or will I have to mod it with the existing grill before fitting?

Is that the difference between OEM ones and mesh grills?

What you get in the oem avantgarde grill accessory kit is the plastic insert with chrome strips already in place, a screw/washer/other misc bits in a bag and a set of instructions. You have to remove the old insert from the chrome frame and fit the new one into the same frame.

Thanks Shude :)

Does anyone know where I can get an OEM Avantgarde Grill Accessory Kit for cheap?

The ones I've seen are similar prices to the stealership.

Cheers

go onto ebay mate, theres a company called matrix, I have heard good stuff, but havnt fitted mine yet, it should arrive this friday

is the oem grille the same thing as the advantgarde grille? im thinking of the grille that has crome strips instead of the plastic ones like the original. and also were can a find one?
