The mileage on my car has crept over the 60k level but I keep putting off selling it because I don't know how to price the car

E Class estates seem to be curious things, with plenty of demand for them even if they're old with spaceship mileages. And to complicate things even further this is a rare (Marmite?) petrol V8.

a) Anyone got any experience of seeing / pricing these things?

b) Should I sell, or just keep it rolling until it reaches the "ton?"

Here's one that's the same as mine that's just popped up on Autotrader - the first I've seen in two years of looking. Same as mine, except that mine's has had 12 Main Dealer services, not six. £7k for a 66k mile car.

Assuming spec and condition are the same, then the more detailed or more complete history file might be worth £250 or maybe £500 more for a super fan. Whether the vendor has priced it right will determined by how quickly it sells.

If it sells quickly, is that a good thing or bad? Not sure, it's a specialist market and I'd be surprised if there's more than one serious buyer ready to pull the trigger at any one time, and it would a shame for the 'other' guy to sell his if you could have sold yours.

If you would be prepared to sell yours for less, advertising now, at a price a little under the car you linked to might be a good idea, as it gives a serious buyer a reference point to compare to. Bit cheaper, better history, who could resist?!

Good luck whichever route you take.

Oh no, not again! I recall there were 7 pages of advice on this last summer which resulted in you not selling the car. Why would anything have changed since then.
If you want to sell it put in on eBay with a sensible (to you) reserve.

But, given the praise lavished on it last time round and the mileage, why sell?

Anyway, see previous (overlong) thread for answers ....

I'll get some

I didn't try to advertise it last year, as I think I said at the time. It ticks all my boxes in terms of giving me a fast sensible family car. The thing that nags at me is the mileage, which is now at 67, I think. Way higher than I've had for a long time.

I've just had a couple of months in the South of France with it, and I can't get my head round whether I should sell it. If I could get a newer E500 estate with 30k on it, I'd get it. At the moment I might get an S500 and give up the 5th door.

I genuinely don't know what to do. When that advert on Autotrader popped up, it made me wonder what do other people think? In a way, I'm looking for people to tell me not to be so daft (again), and stick with it for another five years until it reaches 100k. In the end, it's just my family car, my personal runabout is an SL.

I still don't understand why there are so few of these estates around. It still seems a much more polished car than an ML500.

If you do not need to sell it, then don`t !

Mine has taken me to and from Spain twice in each of the last 10 years and has now amassed 214,000 miles. Just give it the usual Annual Service with a good Indy !!

Regarrds

Sorry, but anyone who thinks of selling a car like this with a full service history simply because it has done 67,000miles (and that does seem to be the sole reason the OP is thinking of selling the car) is bonkers. As jpwilliams commented, if you don't need to sell it, don't!

My W211 is 289K up. Your car is capable of the same too.

Thanks for the advice & support, guys. I'll stick with it.

Mind you, I put this question up again because I saw the same mileage car being advertised by a dealer, for the first time in my memory. Checked again this morning: Sold within three days. So maybe these E500 estates are quietly popular.

But I'll be sticking with this. What else could I replace it with?

I'm in a similar position to you, Mike - same car, but nearly double the mileage. I've been looking to replace mine for the last couple of years, but as expensive parts (eg rear air springs) get replaced along the way, I know that I have a well sorted car that's as good to drive today as it was when I bought it five years ago. They are great cars, and it fulfills its role admirably. What makes me want to change it more than anything is the lack of a sunroof, but as I use it mainly in the winter, and I have a convertible, I can live with that.

I don't think there will be a time soon when they fetch what we know they should be worth, but imagine the value of an S124 E500 today, had they made them! Or did they?

Mike,

You asked about the W124 500E Estate: They weren't manufactured by Porsche, who built the 500E's for Mercedes, but a few handy chaps did drop an 500E engine into a S124 Estate body. Rarer than hens' teeth and obviously not the same as something actually made in Sindelfingen, and not necessarily having all the bits and pieces that you would have on the V8.

Looks like we enjoy the same cars: SL for day to day, and S211 as the Familienwagen.

I haven't scratched the R230 itch yet, Mike, although I have my eye on one at the moment. The last time I looked, I ended up buying another 129!

£2995 is about the most to hope for, there's only so many people who want a 13 year old estate car with a V8 in it, low miles or not.

Diesel ones are cheap now, will be hard to convince the buying public that a 15mpg car is better than a 50mpg car.

Being an ugly sister Elegance won't help it either.

Nick,

I guess you didn't see the original post, that started off this chain, pointing to the 2004 E500 Elegance Estate with 66k on the clock and two owners that was freshly advertised for £7,000.

It sold within 3 days of being listed on Autotrader. So presumably someone wanted one.

It's the only sub 100k E500 Estate there's been on Autotrader in the last 24 months.

I get 25mph from the E500. You would need to be using it purely in the City to get lower mpg out of the 7G auto box car.

Agreed that most would like a 220 Diesel's 50mpg. But some would never buy diesel, not because it's always more expensive to maintain, but simply because we prefer the performance of a V8 petrol. (That may change when AMG start making diesels, of course)

There can't be more than a hundred V8 E500 Estates's in the UK. (less than 500 E500's including the normal saloon.)

Ugly sister? It's all a question of taste. Some need the AMG, some need wood and nappa leather.

Stick it on autotrader for £7k then, I'm happy to be proved wrong, but in my experience old Mercedes with V8s are hard to rehome, especially at £5k more than all the diesel ones.

Stop dithering over it. If you want to know what it's worth, stick it on eBay with a totally unrealistic reserve (£7K:D?); what it bids to will tell you what it's worth NOW. It will almost certainly be less than you think, let alone hope...

What it is worth if you don't have to sell it, and can wait for the 'right' buyer (mug, or connoisseur, depending on your viewpoint), is another matter. It sounds very decent, but I suspect many buyers would rather stump up the extra for an E55K; I would, and I don't give a damn about future values.

This is a bad time of year to be selling cars, particularly thirsty V8s, especially ones that do not have the cachet of an AMG version. What another E500 recently sold for on Autotrader is an indication, that's all, but you don't know how much that one sold for anyway, only what it was advertised at.

Keep it until the Spring.

High Miler on Ebay recently 03 or 04 I think about 170/180K up for £2,000
yes 2K! I was tempted and still am for an E500 Estate I dont want the expense of AMG brakes discs etc 500 performance is adequate for me . Tempted because I might be able to get from 4 mercs to 3 the 210 is long in the Tooth , The CLK is great I love the V8 in it but not as practical so E500 would give me the best of both worlds currently pondering the higher mileage reliability of the 7G and the Airmatic tho and the 32O diesels torque is not far from a 500's but with the economy / no air up front and a reliably proven 722.6 5 speeder thats the competition and the problem
What colour / spec is yours ?
What spec and price was the recent autotrader one ?
Desirable for me is Heated Seats / Parktronic / Designo Interior /7 seats & History

. , : ; use as you wish

As I said on Saturday after some of the comments about mileage on these cars, I'll stick with it, even though it's now on 68k miles! (shock horror!).

I raised the question because I saw exactly the same car as mine (silver, 67k, nappa, sunroof, parktronic, always garaged, Fsh) advertised for the first time in 2 years of running a search for sub-100k E500's estates. I'm not trying to sell it on here, or anywhere else, at the moment.

It's an interesting view that with 14 MB service invoices and 67k on the clock that the E500 is only worth £2k.

And a good point that you may know the advertised price, but that doesn't tell you what price it was sold at - even if it went within 2 days of putting the ad up.

And absolutely true that Winter is a silly time to sell cars. Easter makes much more sense.

Doesn't help that I can't think of a good Familienwagen to replace it with - especially for someone that likes to put bikes in the back. Such a shame that the ML500 and R500 are both cumbersome in their own ways. An S500 with a tow-bar is the best idea I can think of - but a tow bar on an S500 ?

Thanks for the advice and debate. It has been a great help in thinking this one through.
