Can anyone advise how to remove / refit the colour-coded door mirror surround (drivers door - folding type) from a 1998 E Class following an "incident" with the garage door please - I would like to replace it with a new one if possible (or at least take it to be repaired without losing the use of the car)?

Is this possible as a d-i-y job without any specialist tools?

Many thanks in anticipation

Thanks for the response - but the internal gubbins of my mirror isn't the same as that in the photos - there is no obvious "C" clip for instance.

Are yours power folding, or manual folding ? - the power folding ones are different ....

They are power folding.

There is also significant resistance when trying to fold them forwards to see what lies underneath - and I don't want to force anything!

Fold the mirrors in.
There will now be a wire clip exposed. Flip the clip over the latches and then unfold the mirror so the case can be slid off avoiding the door skin.

Use the power folding function to fold them inwards.

You will then see a vertical metal retaining clip that fits over a black plastic lug in the centre.

Use a long flat bladed screwdriver to flip the clip off the lug.

You should then be able to slide the cover off over the glass - it may help to unfold the mirrors first (again, using the power function - don't try and force them by hand !!) before removing the cover.

Refitting requires the reverse - metal clip to be persuaded back over the plastic lug with long flat bladed screwdriver.

@Dieselman ... :)

Many thanks, both. I'll give it a go this evening !

Watch this space !

Job done!

The good news is that, once I'd located the retaining clip, I easily managed to take off the old mirror surround and replace it with a new one - takes about 3 minutes to do !

I wasn't sure which of the assorted bits of harware inside the surround was the retaining clip, but I actually found a video of how to do it in an American MB forum. I will add the link to this post shortly for the benefit of fellow owners.

Incidentally, my local MB garage were very good. Got a new, pre-painted surround off the shelf for £43. The minimum I was quoted to repair the old one was £55 by chip/dent repair specialists

This is the link referred to above (copy and paste all of it including the .mpg into your browser address bar):
You'll need quicktime to view the video

Part no.

The "description of goods" on the invoice says "ma210 811 02 60/ 9744 10608050 housing" - don't know if this is the part no.
There are several other numbers on the box that it came in!
Exact price was £43.79 inc VAT.

9744 This is the colour code.

Hopefully your car is 744 Silver otherwise you've got the wrong cover. ;)
