Remove the white plastic bulb holder from its seating by pushing it AWAY from your face.

Replace the bulb and refit in reverse.

I am not absolutely certain but I believe that the principle is very similar in 1980s and 1990s Mercedes gearsticks.
On this thread, the light bulb has been turned on in the pictures for the sake of a clearer illustration.
Needless to say, you are obviously supposed to disconnect the battery before tampering with the electrics.
The light bulb I used was a clear 1.2w 12v bulb.
For similar shaped light bulbs used in ventilation controls, a forum member recommended the more expensive frosty OEM bulbs (less heat).
Another member recommended the 0.4w 12v bulbs which he replaced on his 1996 convertible.
