Hi All

Since buying the E63, haven't really had much time to do much on it, One part that did need upgrading was the cheap looking plastic airbag unit. You can buy a cover like I did on the w212 and replace it but its a little more tricky on the w213 facelift airbag. With this in mind I opted to buy a whole unit which was originally from an S-Class.

some things to note, there are multiple types of AMG airbags in the facelift w213.
- Dual ignitor (pre 2018) vs Single Ignitor (2018-2019) differentiated by the number of plugs, one per ignitor and the shape of the airbag is different. There was a change in airbag on 2020+ models also.

- Flat bottom vs round, see image

Back onto the install

First of all disconnect the battery

1. Remove the rain cover by twisting the two clips as shown and lifting up.

2. Remove the cabin air filter box by unclipping the two sides and lifting up

3, Remove the negative terminal and place safely away

4. As per all Mercedes the airbag is removed by using a small screwdriver at the back of the steering wheel in the marked holes, this will release the clip on the airbag bracket (one on each side).

5. You should hear a click and see the airbag popping up on each side, keep one hand on the airbag to stop it falling out

6. Pull the airbag out a little and you can see the yellow connector on the steering wheel side, unclip top lip by pushing down and bottom by pushing up and wiggle the yellow plug out to remove.

7. The airbag also had different mounting pins, so the mounting plate also had to be changed as the holes were in different places, remove 3x torque screws from the plate and remove small spade connector. Old vs new, you can see the different placement of the holes.

8. The new plate does not come with the rear springs so I pulled these out the old plate and they push fitted into the new plate easily. You can see the springs in the pic below where I have already moved one over.

10, installation is the reverse of the removal, below ifs the finished picture with the new airbag.

I think the Leather Airbag should have been a standard feature as its one of the things that lets the interior quality down.

Have done the exact same on my W213, I also felt the look of the standard air bag just looked cheap.

My airbag was also from an S Class, looks much better in my eyes.

Mine was a straight swap, no messing with plates or whatnot. Mine is a 2017 plate, so different steering wheel.

Looks fantastic. I agree, it always should have been like that 👍🏻
