How to sell a Mercedes in the 1980's

Certainly in the 1970s you had to put your name on a waiting list and discounts were unheard of .

Sometimes people would put down a deposit and then sell the ordered new car at a premium before taking delivery .

Very interesting watch. I vividly recall accompanying my Dad to Rawsons TMS Mercedes in Tonbridge back in 1984. I’d have been seven years old and Dad was buying a brand new 230TE. I remember the salesman, the sales patter and it was so similar to this video. Can’t believe I remember it all so vividly 36 years on! But it was a relationship back then. I remember Dad getting an invite to the launch Of the W124 a year or so later and the salesman still remembered him by name and came over for a chat. Pretty impressive. The sales guy was a proper Swiss Tony but he had been doing it for years. I’m fairly sure that the Audi salesman I met last year when getting my A6 would not recognise or remember me 12 months on.

The other thing I recall was that Dad got dressed up to go car shopping. Suit and tie on a Saturday was the order of the day. How times change...

We are of similar age and my memories are same as yours. The difference is that in those days the cars were a luxury and now are a commodity. Maybe the ethos as seen in the video is still the same when buying today high-end cars and MB and BMW are not in that category any more, unfortunately.

Maybe that’s where I’m going wrong. Car sales people seem to turn their nose at me. I am a bit scruffy though.
