For his anti American rhetoric or for his record on halving poverty in his country. I hope it is the latter as it is a more enduring achievement.

What connection has this to UK party politics then?

I liked him.

I think he will be remembered with affection.

His record does have some sticky moments but his visceral response to the American attempt on his life must have made the state department think twice about ordering any future assassinations of socialist leaders backed by their people.

Which has to be a good thing.

Don't know anything about the bloke Wes but reducing poverty by 50% is certainly some achievement. Any idea how he did it?

Schools, healthcare, improved welfare, etc.
If only North Sea oil revenue had been so thoughtfully applied...

Sovereign wealth funds are okay if you can afford them.

He will surely be remembered for giving his name to an entire generation of feckless, baseball capped, droopy trouser teen's. Sorry couldn't resist.

His anti-American rhetoric was irrelevant. But to some audiences it makes you cool so that they miss the dodgier aspects of your policies.

This guy was a liability to his country. His democratic credentials were suspect. If he had survived another 20 years then what would he have done to stay in power? And what would be the condition of his country and its economy.

I think Venezuala may have had a lucky escape - but that depends on what (or who) is to come.

Your avatar is offensive, stay out of this unless you have something useful to contribute

I can't see any avatars or sigs because I have opted not to. I prefer to judge the merit (or otherwise) of posts by what's actually in the posts.

It's your post ^^ which is coming across as offensive here.

FYI
You know that picture of Maggie from the front of Downing Street Years?
Similar but a couple of years older and the hair is more coiffed.

The Venezuelan economy is overwhelmingly dependant on its oil exports and they won't last forever.

And their economy tanked badly following the global recession - worse than that of most of their neighbours. There are widespread shortages of essentials and galloping inflation running at 30% which will plunge many people right back into poverty.

Shaping his ideology based on Simon Bolivar (who himself fought against imperialism) Hugo Chavez did more for the lower classes in fifteen years than previous leaders throughout their entire history.

He traded oil with Cuba in return for medical and educational assistance in the way of doctors and scholars, his supporters had to put up with being labelled 'monkeys' by his opponents, all of which were the upper classes & neoliberalist.

And anyone that calls George W. Bush a 'donkey' is all right by me...

You are offensive. Go away
