Great write up thanks.
This is exactly what I tried to do on my 92 reg e300d non turbo.
I did exactly as you described, but encountered 2 problems,,,
1 my spline socket would not fit down far enough onto the valve, it doesn't go down enough to have the spline bit onto the teeth of the valve. It's a laser tools part 5471 and I have been assured its the right one! Any ideas?
2 when I gave in and put it back together, it now runs with a load tapping noise from me of the injectors, I think dirt inside? I tried to keep things clean somim gutted, what's the cure for this please?
