I successfully installed the Mercedes QuickPark system to my 2007 W169 A-Class, saving me the £600 quoted by MB to install the system.

You will need:

  • Mercedes QuickParc System for W169 - B6 7 82 3816
  • Spray paint and lacquer for for vehicle colour
  • 20mm hole saw bit
  • small drill bit for pilot holes
  • 8mm spanner
  • a small file
  • a hour or two
How to:

1) Paint the Sensors

Leave the sensors in their box and apply a thin coat of paint to them, building up until you have a few layers and an even coating. Once dried you can apply a coat or two of laqcuer. Once dried remove from the painting box.

2) Install the unit and bleeper

Open the storage unit on the right-hand side of the boot and fold forward the inner compartment to get access to the rear light cluster. Locate the connector on the rear light cluster and remove it. Take the power lead from the QuickParc system and plug the cable you have just removed into this, then plug the other end back into the lighting cluster.

At the bottom of the vehicle, below the light cluster there is a hole, use this to attach the bracket to the vehicle and insert the control unit into the bracket (probably worth doing this after you have connected all the cables). You can connect the power cable and the beeper to the control unit. Site the bleeper somewhere inside the boot so that you can hear it (I fixed it with blu-tac to test several positions before deciding on the final location.

Below the control unit is a plastic plug that you should remove to allow the cabling from the sensors to run through.

You are now ready to install the sensors.

3) Remove the bumper

This was the hardest part for me! First open the boot, you will notice 4 plastic covers on the vertical part of the bumper. Push the bottom half of each one with your finger and the cover will pop open. Remove the 4 bolts behind these 4 covers.

Under the bumper there are another 4 bolts to remove, these are easy to spot and simply unscrew.

I don't have pics of this next bit - sorry

In the rear wheel arch there is a plastic peg holding the felt lining into place. Remove the pin from the middle on this peg with a small screwdriver or knife and then the peg should come out. Once you have peeled back the lining there is 1 more bolt holding the bumper on, it is vertical and about an inch inside the arch where the bumper joins the body. Remove this from both sides.

You should have removed a total of 10 bolts and 2 plastic pegs.

With two of you, hold the bumper where the bumper reaches the wheel arch on both sides and gently pull it away from the vehicle, the bumper will unsnap from the bodywork and then slide off.

4) Install the sensors

With the bumper removed you will see in the inside there are 4 X's marking the position of the sensors, from the back of the bumper (unpainted side) drill a small pilot hole thought the bumper. Flip the bumper over, cover the area to be drilled with masking tape, then use the 20mm bit to drill thought (using the pilot holes) from the painted side through to the unpainted side.

The sensors are numbered 1 to 4 going from left to right if you were looking at the vehicle. Insert each sensor into the bumper gently. You will probably need to file the hole at the top slightly to allow the ridge of the sensor to fit through. NOTE: there is a small dot on the sensor face to indicate UP. With the sensors installed you can open the plastic wings on each sensor to hold it in place.

Connect each sensor to the cable in turn, leaving the part of the cable to go to the control box on the right-hand side. You can use the cable ties in the kit to tidy the cables up and keep them in place.

Bring the bumper up to the vehicle and with a friend holding it close, run the end of the cable up through the hole you unplugged earlier. The cable at this end has a custom-fit plug moulded around the cable that you should fit into the hole. Now re-fit the bumper and connect the cables marked 1-4 into the control unit sockets marked 1-4.

5) Calibrate the system

Find a flat wall that you can reverse up-to so that your vehicle is 50cm from the wall. Make sure that it is a flat wall and there are no obstructions so the system can calibrate correctly.

Put the car into reverse, you will hear 2 beeps. Wait for 10 seconds. The system will now let out a continuous beeeeep. Take the car out of reverse and turn off. Calibration is complete. On the wiring for the control unit there is a loop of blue wire, cut this to store the calibration.

If after leaving the vehicle in reverse for 10 seconds you get beep - beep - beep rather than a continuous tone then the calibration has failed. Check all the sensors and cabling and try again.

Your system is now working, the system should beep as you approach an object and make a continuous beep when you are 30 cm away from it.
