This comes up on a regular basis, so I thought i would convert the pdf file that is knocking about everywhere into a how-to friendly thread.

All credit goes to Paul Darke who originally wrote the guide. I remember him telling me that he wanted this as a howto officially but i believe he has since left the forum, so i'm putting it up here. I have done this to my W208 CLK and can confirm the instructions are correct :)

Follow these instructions at your own risk, this worked on my 1998
E430. It has also been tested and verified on a W208 CLK.
However I am not sure if it is the same for all W210’s. I only decided
to write these Instructions after I had completed the upgrade, as a
result I don’t have all the part numbers.

This should cost no more than £800

Note: some of the photos refer to the removal of old parts, but show new parts being removed. This is because the photos were
only taken after the project was completed.

Cluster Removal Tool

MB Parts Used

• Steering wheel -A210 460 14 03 9C2G ( see pic 1)
• Airbag -A210 460 06 989C290X( see pic 2)
• SRS Ring – 210 460 0049 ( see pic 3)
• Cluster – A208 540 66 11 (AMG version)
– I would have been better off using the 210 equivalent as I have has some issues with the fuel gauge working properly
• Connectors(sorry no part numbers, MB should be able to give you these from these descriptions)
– Yellow SRS connector with five pins, attaches to back of SRS ring as above (see pic 4)
– Pin contacts A008 545 55 26 (suggest you get two packs)
– Connector for inserting into M & N on IC (see pic 5)
– Any 2 pin plug and socket connector ( for horn connector )

BEFORE YOU START - DISCONNECT YOUR BATTERY - DO NOT TOUCH BATTERY OR IGNITION ONCE YOU HAVE TAKEN THE AIRBAG OUT UNTIL IT IS ALL SCREWED BACK ON AGAIN. THIS WILL AVOID DANGER AND ALSO HOPEFULLY PREVENT THE SRS LIGHT COMING ON!!

Remove Airbag

Undo the two torx ( T30) screws that hold the airbag to the steering
wheel.
These are accessed from behind the steering wheel.

A long torx driver is required for this.

Once the airbag is free, remove the two horn connectors and the central airbag connector, this will allow you to fully remove the Airbag.

Note: A SRS indicator may well be lit after this, MB can reset this when they programme the IC. It is nothing to worry about.

Remove Steering Wheel

Remove Steering Wheel With the airbag removed you can now undo the large hex screw that holds the steering wheel in place.

There is a small amount of thread lock on the screw, hence a reasonable amount of force is required.

Then remove the SW to expose the SRS ring.

The steering wheel should be straight before removing Hex screw

Remove Blinker Assembly

The blinker assy. Is remove by the three screws as shown. Also remove the white and yellow connector and the connector into the blinker assy.

The white connector will remain as is, but the yellow 4 pin connector will be replaced by a yellow five pin connector. Remove all four pins from the body of the old connector.

Brown – No longer used
Yellow – Connected to Yellow/Black of harness which
in turn will connect to IC N1
Violet – reused in new 5 pin connector at position 4
Green – reused in new 5 pin connector at position 5

This photo also shows the cruise control switch which does not need to be removed and may not be present in your vehicle.

At this point you can also remove the steering column plastic cowling to make access to the the wiring easier

Pic shows New 5 pin connector installed, At this stage yours will be 4 pins

Remove Instrument Cluster

Insert the cluster removal tools as indicated, turn through 90 degrees and pull. This will extract the old IC.

Note. If your IC has never been removed before it will need reasonable force, don’t despair it will come eventually.

1 -Red/Black New cable to IC pos 14
2 -Brown New cable to IC pos 15
3 -Blue/Black New Cable to IC pos 18

Modify Blinker Assembly

File the blinker assembly as shown, so that the new yellow five pin connector lines up with the five pins of the new SRS ring. To check the alignment these units can be put together out of the car.

The 2nd pic shows the new five pin connector inserted into this modified blinker assembly.

Programme New IC

IMPORTANT WARNING

Do not drive more than 200Km before getting the new cluster Programmed to the car, as this will lock the new cluster without Any mileage showing and MB will not be able to set the mileage.

It took me 30 mins. to persuade MB to undertake this work as they said it is impossible And can’t be done, I had to provide a written waiver before they would do this work. I hope you have better luck than me.

MB will need to programme the following:-
-Activate navigation menu
-Set tank capacity – mine was 80 L (tank with ski hole = 60L)
-Change Can ID – This is important
-Set Engine capacity
-Set to Manual transmiossion
-Set for automatic climate control – if your has it
-Set country code as last cluster

Faults

It is possible that you may get an ABS and/or ESP fault after completion, in order to reset this you will need to turn the steering wheel fully left then fully right twice. This will reset these two errors.

If you have an SRS fault this is because you have turned on the ignition with the airbag disconnected, MB can reset this for you when they do the programming.

THE END!
