Just looking at how I can implement Quality Centre for best effect, on behalf of the organisation I work for.

SAP is the first priority, but other applications will follow. I'm trying to get a feel for where the hotspots are that we should focus on.

It would be good to hear from anyone with experience of the tool.

Not sure about the producer of brown sauce, but if you want some proper UNIX boxes... Then PM me.. he says tongue in cheek..

Not sure that you are going to get a huge response on this one.

It is not my direct area of expertise, I am more on the Functional Architecture side than operations, project deployment etc.

My 2P though is that if you have not already invested in a testing tool for SAP, then you will not go far wrong, this is Mercury Quality Centre purchased and rebranded (tweaked a little perhaps as well) after all I believe.

If you have then you need to start thinking about the business case for change.

I will see if I can get a few soundbites from those who know more about this than I.

Also do you have Solution Manager? Does it not integrate with that, which is one of the big selling points?

Loosely involved with a SAP implementation at the moment (only part time on the internet bank side - so not really touching SAP - the SAP/Legacy glue will be a layer below us).

Also we use HP/MQC as the main test tool (and QTP as well for automated stuff). Setup here is quite mature - so I'm not sure how that reflects what comes out of the box, but it's all basic common sense stuff, define requirements, define tests/test sets, run them and record results and raise/manage defects. Reporting is a weekness in our implementation, I want to see daily totals of tests run, passed, failed, blocked by other tests, defect raised, fixed, available for re-test, percentages complete and so on. Doesn't seem to come that easy. Probably easy to let the reporting take a back seat when implementing MQC - so make sure it gets thought about up front.

Thanks for the responses folks. It's a long shot on a car forum, but the amount of expertise on here astounds me.

We're already committed to the product financially, and the hot potato has been thrown to me to catch.

Matt, indeed SolMan does seem to go hand-in-hand with Quality Centre, but I need to look further into it.

Steve, sounds like we can learn by the shortfall you're feeling. I'll start looking at reporting requirements, and work back from there.

Work starts in earnest next week, so at the moment I'm just trying to get an view on where we're likely to encounter difficulties.

Any other thoughts would be gratefully received.

Hi Bobby,

I work in IT consulting, my current client is performing large-scale software testing.

I run the operation of QC on a daily basis - we inherited the tool as a managed service from HP in a pretty poor state, and have been bringing our use of it up to modern standards for the past 6 months.

One of the greatest limitations, I feel, is reporting - whether it is the built in reports to the 'Excel Reporting' add in, they are very poor.

We custom developed a length SQL, OTA and VB script that runs from Excel and produces a daily summary in a neat PowerPoint of all of things mentioned in the post above - I could send a copy to you with the client details stripped out if you're interested??

Cheers,

Alex

Thanks for your thoughts Alex.

I can see a trend emerging here around reporting being a weak link.

If you could share a copy of your daily summary then that would be great.

Until you hit a post count of 30 (I think) you're unable to send/receive Private Messages.

Without knowing when you might be back online, I'm reluctant to post a valid email address on the open forum for fear of being picked up by spambots, so I'll set up a specific email address and post that.

Thank you once more.
