Well, My parents have W209 200k, Me and My girlfriend have Smart ForTwo 0.6, and Now I'm thinking about buying a car for myself (and for cruising back home to Latvia on it)

Because the last three trips we made on a smart (it's not that bad, but the luggage took all the space even in passenger footwell) So I'm thinking for a something larger.

I don't particularly like diesel engines (but find them rather good)

So I am considering four types of engines for w202.

180, 200, 230k and 220cdi. The last two of the list would be a loads more expensive in the overall price of the car.

I wish to spent no more then 15 hundred quid on it. And I really like the facelift models.

So Soon I will be hunting on the 180 and 200 engines with manual gearbox from 1996, and for an auto with the same engine, from 97 (As they've placed the 5 speed gearbox in it since that time)

Who can give any advice about that?

BTW, Hello there, I'm new to this forum ;)

Some offtop as well: here are some pics of our smart:

Saw that already, Pre-Facelift model, well shagged Auto (and only 4 gear auto)
I Really would like an 1997 Auto. Or 1996 Manual :) (Want to get a facelift version)

the c180 is a cool car one of the best iv ever owned sold one still got one... but i think even the c200 gives you that bit more power for the same mpg costs ect.. the c180 can be really slow especially round london way pulinn on to the n circular it was just plain dangerous.. lol

If I were buying an older c class then I would defo go for the 4 speed auto; much more reliable than the 5 speeder.

But it's more petrol consuming on motorways (most of my drives)

In fact I would buy a 190e 2.6 auto rather than any w202.

Just don't like the looks of 190e. And 2.6 is too much for me (insurance + petrol costs)

The Maximum I would like to have is a C230 Kompressor.

I found when I test drove a C180 auto it was very slow, I ended up with a
C180 manual, it really makes a difference the manual box when pulling out, accelerating in traffic etc. I also spent half hour at 4am in France driving at 115mph as was tired and needed to get to my mother-in-law. My mum has the C230K in auto and that is lovely to drive, has great acceleration. I think you need a powerful engine for auto.
