HELP

I have an A160 courtesy car.

I have to say its a rather good little thing. Heaps better than the Ford Ka MB Glasgow shafted me with last time.

Pluses

Its comfortable and a 6ft bloke can get a nice low driving position and the seat squab has a lot of tilt so you can get closer to the wheel with your legs supported.

Its solid. Inside and outside. Cabin is no worse or better than the 204 C class.

Engine, its quiet and economical-returns about the same MPG as my 320cdi 211 on the run, better around town.

Its manoeuvrable. Great town car, easy to place on the road and visibility, WOW.

The drive train, excellent manual box, easy clutch, nice precise gear change.

Its got a proper hand brake.

Its got big car comforts, trip computer, colour screen radio stuff, auto lights, wipers.

Space, its just a 3dr but masses of room behind my seat -same as my 211 give take 1cm here or there. Boot is good.

Its rather merc like to drive (upto a point). Refined, effortless (if you dont mind being overtaken by everyone) and classy feeling. Controls are very intuitive.

Negatives

Its dog slow. A 1600 should be more lively. A 200 petrol or 180-200cdi would fix that. I doubt it will go much above 100 and it will take its time getting there. 70mph is a tad racious, its better to stick to 60mph in this car where everything seems a tad more comfortable.

The seating is excellent, but the steering wheel needs to adjust out for reach, it just does rake. I'd like it closer to me.

Tall sided, its a competent handler but not a massive "FUN" car. For a maturer buyer though it offers a lot. MB should stick with it, its a different car and its a shame they'll pull it for a conventional type hatch.

Steering at low speeds is a doddle, gets more vague at high speeds.

Tailgate, it doesnt split, if you are a wee person, reaching up to close it is a PITA. The only poor bit of design.

Wow, praise indeed from ***.

So should a wifey and rug rats come along for Steve I guess we know what her chariot will be.

Aye, its a perfect second town car.

Its ok out of town, maybe I am spoilt being used to the 211 but I suspect as an all round car a focus, golf or Octavia would serve as a family motor better, but for a town run about, the A class is "a class" act...

I'll get my coat....

^ we loved my wifes old A210 LWB, more leg room than my ML or Dads E class estate.

Swapped it for a B class and that's so good we are using it all the time :) 58mpg best averaging 47mpg currently (auto 2.0d) goes well, 7 speed cvt gearbox is great.

A200Cdi would be a nippy little thng.

Steering column manually adjustable for reach is an option on the W169. I have it but I dont need to use it personally but for a tall person it would be needed.

Closing the boot there is a handle built in to the bottom of the tailgate to make it easier.

I also think the petrol A160 is slow and the A150 even more so but others have commented before they are perfectly fine.

I like the A-Class, it's under-rated. A cleverly designed car, that has a lot to offer if you want a small family car.

A B class with adjustable steering collumn and a 200cdi would be a compelling car.

I though to be honest I'd hate the thing, but am quite taken with it and impressed.

Steve

You are comparing it with a Ka and noting it's failings against your E class.

Of course, it falls in between and you have found that out.

An A160 isn't as good as a Mk5 VW Golf. Been there, done that.

If a B200 cdi is seemingly good enough - buy one and stop wishing your E320 is something it isn't ............

Blimey is the B Class a car for the "New Man" then. He will be carrying a manbag next:D:D

Nah, but can appreciate for what it is its ok.

Its not my "bag" but can see why folk get them. However, I never would have got the chance to find out if my E320 worked as it should.
