I do love a CLS...AMG

CLS63 AMG
So I still own my first Merc, a CLS63 which still lives a very sheltered life and is in storage. Still have the CL500 but I had a hankering for something with that rather lovely 5.4 supercharged engine. Considered an E55 or even SL55 but the E's weren't doing it for me and the SL from experience is a high maintenance car by default, let alone adding the AMG costs on top.

I then pondered the CLS55. I've owned two of the same-ish cars before and they present remarkably good value. There are very few to choose from on Autotrader, 9 in total at the time but I settled on this. It's a 2006 CLS55 with 76k on the clock.

Despite this actually being a long distance sale, I had some in depth discussions with the seller and was sent info on the history, spec and walk round videos. The previous owner is a detailer for a living so it was in great condition.

I haven't cleaned the outside so not in depth pics of the but it's all straight and blemish free. Sorted tax and insurance this morning and very carefully drove to my nearest Shell. The car only showed 9 miles of range when it was delivered and the petrol station is 8 miles away. Thankfully it crept up as I made my way there and £110 later I had a full tank.

First impression of the drive compared to the CLS63 is that they are similar yet different. The 55 has more accessible torque, where the 63 loves to rev. The 55 at times feels angrier, possibly due to the 5 speed box so when it drops down it feels that bit more frantic. That said, the 55 has potential for a lot more power a lot more easily! Both wonderful engines to be fair.

Other than the condition, the spec also interested me on this example. Whoever had this new ticked several boxes, it has aircooled/heated dynamic seats, heated rear seats and automatic blind in the back. The last owner also fitted an Android head unit which is pretty decent and some later LED tail lights, oh and chopped one of the resonator boxes so it sounds a bit angrier. Not too much so but you know when it builds the revs up.

Naturally I cleaned and sealed the leather seats and gave the interior a full wipe down this evening.

It came with the OEM mats but also these heavy duty rubber ones, which I usually buy for my cars anyway.

The weather this weekend isn't very conducive with cleaning the outside so I'll aim to get under the bonnet after work next week. Give the engine bay a spruce up.

I got the seal of approval from my youngest daughter as I picked her up from school. She goes, "It doesn't feel very fast". Mainly because we were driving past her school and I didn't want to mangle the lollipop lady. She then squealed when I put my foot down on the national speed limit stretch, and said it was "really cool". Future petrol head in the making haha.

Great cars. Mine was a forever car until I was taken out by a young woman who didn't use her mirrors.

Lovely motor, Alex. 😎🙂👍

That is gutting mate! I'm aiming for this one to be a keeper but won't be a daily car. I'm not sure my pockets are deep enough for the fuel consumption haha.

Absolutely lovely - I have always had the desire for a car with air conditioned seats - but that seems quite uncommon on non-AMG E classes like mine.
I've got them on mine. They're not actually air conditioned; they have a fan in the seat back and perforated leather. Great on a hot day, though. You get cooled by the AC in front and the fan behind.

If I drop all my windows to cool the car down before I get in, the fan kicks in. Nice touch.

Personally I find the mct box with the 6.2 so responsive. And at the switch of a paddle or heavier planted foot it springs into life. Where as the old 5 speed box with the torque of the 55k engine is responsive but still delayed compared to the N/A engine. But each to there own. I like the look of my previous CLS from looking in but not mad on the visibility aspect when looking out. Especially at junctions. I just found the glass windows range to be that little bit restricted which could feel very odd at times. Claustrophobic to be honest. Unsure if that would alter my views if the vehicle had a panaramic roof. Which would let more natural light in. Again each to there own. Nice shape car looking from out to in though.
Would be interesting if the 55k motor was mated to the mct transmission. Personally always felt the e55k 5 speed lacked a gear or two!

Nice straight road engine/Box not suited to the twisties though. Neither is the w211 chassis to be honest. Definitely more of a mile muncher/cruiser, but with that lack of a gear or two! This is the 218 chassis or the 219 which was more agile than the 211.

To be fair, they're not all that effective. As said, it's a fan that blows air through the seats, I have them on my CL too but they don't bring much to the table haha.

It’s going to need an engine bay clean buddy , you must be developing a rash and an eye twitch lifting the bonnet
I know right. I'm going to attack the engine bay one evening after work. Won't take a hell of a lot to get it looking heaps better as it has been cleaned but not for some time.

Oh I do like the 7g box, it is definitely quicker. I'd say the only criticism I found left in auto was it sometimes had it's moments where it was torn between deciding which gear. On the paddles though, lovely to drive and obviously you can keep it in on the boil.
I had the 5g box on my old E320cdi and I just used to find that it always felt like it was in the right gear for day to day driving. Cruised round in 3rd on slower roads and 5th was long enough it never felt strained. I did a fair few miles with that and was great. I know it's a more modern thing that cars cruise in higher gears unless the acceleration is called upon.

Interior wise, different strokes etc. My CL feels very airy inside, no B pillar, larger windows etc. The CLS is more snug, and visibility isn't as good, even less so compared to my other half's ML. But my daily car is a convertible Saab 9-3 and with the roof up the visibility is not great. So the CLS isn't worse, my other half had a CLS350cdi for a couple of years, used daily and really took to it. That said I wouldn't not want parking sensors! haha

Handling wise, I think they're impressive for the size of the car but it's never going to change direction as something as light as my little Twingo 133. I think whack it in suspension setting 2 and put the gearbox in sport and it's very engaging, I mean it did manage a 1 min 26 second laptop of the Top Gear track but in reality it's more a GT car with a brutish engine!

My C43 estate was once featured in Performance Car and Dan Trent was the journo. He'd recently ended up at the Ring in 211 E500 (the facelift one with the 5.5). He was a massive Scooby head at the time but said he'd been astonished at just how quickly the E Class would do a lap when he really went for it :)

The 5g and 7g are tortoise slow in comparison to the mct transmission. Does really transform the engine/Car.
