- CLS63 AMG
So I still own my first Merc, a CLS63 which still lives a very sheltered life and is in storage. Still have the CL500 but I had a hankering for something with that rather lovely 5.4 supercharged engine. Considered an E55 or even SL55 but the E's weren't doing it for me and the SL from experience is a high maintenance car by default, let alone adding the AMG costs on top.
I then pondered the CLS55. I've owned two of the same-ish cars before and they present remarkably good value. There are very few to choose from on Autotrader, 9 in total at the time but I settled on this. It's a 2006 CLS55 with 76k on the clock.
Despite this actually being a long distance sale, I had some in depth discussions with the seller and was sent info on the history, spec and walk round videos. The previous owner is a detailer for a living so it was in great condition.
I haven't cleaned the outside so not in depth pics of the but it's all straight and blemish free. Sorted tax and insurance this morning and very carefully drove to my nearest Shell. The car only showed 9 miles of range when it was delivered and the petrol station is 8 miles away. Thankfully it crept up as I made my way there and £110 later I had a full tank.
First impression of the drive compared to the CLS63 is that they are similar yet different. The 55 has more accessible torque, where the 63 loves to rev. The 55 at times feels angrier, possibly due to the 5 speed box so when it drops down it feels that bit more frantic. That said, the 55 has potential for a lot more power a lot more easily! Both wonderful engines to be fair.
Other than the condition, the spec also interested me on this example. Whoever had this new ticked several boxes, it has aircooled/heated dynamic seats, heated rear seats and automatic blind in the back. The last owner also fitted an Android head unit which is pretty decent and some later LED tail lights, oh and chopped one of the resonator boxes so it sounds a bit angrier. Not too much so but you know when it builds the revs up.
Naturally I cleaned and sealed the leather seats and gave the interior a full wipe down this evening.
It came with the OEM mats but also these heavy duty rubber ones, which I usually buy for my cars anyway.
The weather this weekend isn't very conducive with cleaning the outside so I'll aim to get under the bonnet after work next week. Give the engine bay a spruce up.
I got the seal of approval from my youngest daughter as I picked her up from school. She goes, "It doesn't feel very fast". Mainly because we were driving past her school and I didn't want to mangle the lollipop lady. She then squealed when I put my foot down on the national speed limit stretch, and said it was "really cool". Future petrol head in the making haha.
