Once sunny St Albans, Herts - now delightful Deal,
Sat here watching qualifying at Monza and seeing loads of people coming through the docks last week on their way home from Spa has made me think that a road trip to a European GP next year will be a good thing to do.

Anyone done one? Where did you go?

I've not done a European road trip, but last year I went to Singapore for the grand prix.I would 100% recommend it,what an experience you can get so close to the track and cars and the nightlife, don't even get me started on the nightlife!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing place.

I'm extremely jealous right now! My brother-in-law (wife's sisters husband) who lives in Milan is off to Monza tomorrow.... :(

My dream though is to go to Monaco on race weekend.. :D

My one and only GP was a road trip To Monaco. We stayed at a friends place on the French/Italian boarder called Monton a couple of stops on the train. Great weekend mingling with the beautiful, people p, drinking loads and looking at the sights. Crap circuit to watch any racing though!

Great experience.

Done that but with a difference. We were staying at Port Grimaud just down the coast and we rented a boat (crewed). Six of us not counting the crew, moored out in the bay watching through binoculars. The price of the rental included all the food and drink we could manage, windsufers and snorkelling gear. On the way back stopped for a BBQ on a beach until late evening.

One of my fondest memories, was a fantastic day.

I've been to Silverstone a couple of times - admittedly, the last was probably a good 10+ years ago.

Was thinking about Spain, but my mate has suggested Monza with a few factory tours thrown in on the way. He works for Porsche too, so think he should be able to deliver on his "we'll need something fast" suggestion.

I love Singapore, I go there 5 or 6 times a year and lucky enough to get an invite each year by a business partner for the F1 night race.
Will be heading off on the 19th!

What ever you take it will likely have no room so you may need a support vehicle, something that can keep up with almost any Porsche but carry luggage to spare. Now what car could that be? :-)

If there is enough interest in this from the forum, Mrs E says she'd be happy to help out wrt travel, hotels, etc - she works in travel and her company have a dedicated group travel team...

always have it in mind to do Spa,Belgium is easy to do.

Hi paulyv6, I am fortunate to have been to over 30 GP's, mainly Silverstone and Brands but have also managed two road trips to Monza - all absolutely brilliant! Other than top fuel dragsters there is nothing like noise and sensation of F1 car in full qualifying mode. If you enjoy any form of motorsport or fast cars/bikes you must go.
Let me know what you're planning and I might be interested.

I was told only the other day as I supped an ale overlooking Lake Garda, ( by a guy who claimed to have been travelling to GP's for 20 years) that it is hard work getting out of both Spa and Monza after the event!

I also fancied driving down and over the Stelvio Pass etc, the wife did not. A week of driving around the Garda region was a good substitute though.

There are companies that organise tours to Monza and Mille Miglia amongst others,
they did seem pricey though, but one certainly looks to use good hotels.

As for me an F1 fan, I went to the Chinese GP when in Shanghai and was dissapointed by the whole event, though some great action on the corner I was on.

Over 10 thousand empty seats right in front of me but never shown on tv!

The mayor of Texas, or Sherriff or whoever he was, seemed to think Houston is going to be good......

I'd be up for a Spa roadtrip - been meaning to go to that race for years.

I've bitten the bullet and am off to Austin in November - a friend has moved there with his job and five of us are off to stay with him for a few days and take in the GP. Really looking forward to it - though still not sure if it will ACTUALLY take place given the history. I suspect the race will be a bore due to over-conservative tyre choices.

I went to four of the Indy F1 races - boring races in the extreme, but Indianapolis nightlife was surprisingly good fun.

My friend tells me Austin has great nightlife - and he has a reputation for wheels falling off [his and everyone around him]... Wish me luck

Savman - enjoy Singapore, I'm very jealous.

And Perez today - what a drive. I had a feeling he'd get on the podium once he'd stayed out as long as he did before tyre change. Let's hope he wins at his 'home' race in Texas

oh cheers not seen the race or result yet!!!

Sorry - hopefully I didn't give it all away. Still well worth a watch. I won't make that mistake again, particularly when the beeb aren't showing the race live.

Did Silverstone raceday last year - tickets were a birthday present from daughter. when I found out what she'd paid for them I was horrified - total rip-off!! Arrived at the circuit about 11am, walked a long way before finding a place we could actually see the track (opposite the old pits), OK the engine sounds are fantastic but you see more of the racing on TV! As for getting away on the Park and Ride busses - well, it made a Chinese fire drill look well organised!

I've read elsewhaere that European F1 is cheaper and better, and I must admit I'd love to see the cars going through Eau Rouge - or even better do a track day there and actually drive it!
