I had a ride in an M5

Not even seen an E63 estate (or saloon) on the road yet (or not genuine ones anyway).
But would anyone really buy either of these as every day cars? Top end performance AND family practicality is almost a contradiction in terms, isn't it?

Everything I've read/seen suggests that the BMW's (all series) are better to drive that the equivelent Merc, but I'd still chose a Benz, cos the brand is kind of like my hobby. (And I'm a snob!!)

Besides, the E63 has the slide out platform for loading push chairs onto and stuff. Ideal for the arrival of my twins early 2009.

YES!! I'll use this as my angle to persuade mrs. shr to buy an E63!!!
How much are they again? :-)

Congratulations on the twins!!

And, commiserations that mrs. shr will see straight through your dastardly plan!!

:D

I know of one person with a current M5, had a previous one (the V8) as well. Doesn't find the new one is good enough do to justify that in normal use it uses nearly twice the fuel of the old one. That V10 is thirsty.

Very quick though. Best thing about the V8 was that the limiter was set for 155 in 5th gear, so you'd change up and start accelerating again!

Seriously, I wonder when the E60 5 series is replaced whether BM will downsize engine cylinder count. A V10 is a big lump and BMW 50 50 wieght distrobution will be harder to engineer with an engine of that size up front. Indeed a 630i is deemed to be a more poised car than an M6. I love sixes myself so the idea of a 6 clyinder M car is tantalising as other manufactuers would follow suit. Audi's new S4 is a 6, the old one fired on 8.

Genious. They don't build 'em like they used to.

Thanks mate.
And yes, I think you are probably right about my plan. Was worth a try though. He who dares.............

.........often loses!!

i was fortunate enough to get a quick blast in a new M5 last week (from my local dodgy tyre dealer, mighty quick and fantastic handling, as for why ten cylinders?
have you ever heard one of these things on full throttle!!!!!!!!!

Kinda basic inside though and the i drive system sucks, Audi's MMi is much better.

Obviously the old iDrive system, then new one is absolutely stunning!!

1280x480 resolution.
HD for maps and quicker nav + yo can rip usb/ipod/cd to the hard drive.
DVD playback
3D navigation with building and contour landscapes.

Internet access, that talks to the nav, so you can find somewhere on google and send it to the nav as a POI.
You can also send a contact to the car from your laptop/home/office, so you get an email, put the poscode/address into google earth and then email it to the car, get in and it will have it as a destination.

Seriously quick to use and a great system, I personally don't think they needed to add more buttons to the controller, after a day or two using the original system you could do everything without taking your eyes off the road, I guess it is to make life easier for people trying the cars for an hour or two, it is an off putting system to use in a short period of time.

All in all though, this system is stunning.

Probably right gizzE, i have only faffed about with the i drive a couple of times and found it very distracting from the road, i drove an A6 and found it instantly intuitive, i would need to spend more more time with BMW to give it the benefit of the doubt.
My shortlist of cars before buying my E-Class was a 530d, A6 or the E-class and i just think sitting in the E class is such an nice place to be and it's a handsome big brute.....

I think the problem with the 5 series is it needs to be an M-Sport, and really it needs to have a big engine, so 530i at least, then 535d or 550i, if you are going for a smaller engine then it doesn't make as much sense, at that point the E Class wins.

I loved my 535d sport touring, great car, but it needed the run flats ditching to get it comfortable, and you are up to £50k on a dog carrier by the time you have got a few options like Nav, bluetooth, panoramic roof, heads up display and xenons.

Right now buying another estate to replace the E320 I would go for an E320cdi Avantgarde or sport, or even an older E55, still more comfortable than a BMW M-Sport even though it is an AMG.

Those runflats ruin the beemers, technology is great, but my god the ride is harsh and noisy.

The M5 however is a simply outstanding machine, my only grip is that, its very very quick, but you feel a bit disconnected, you can be doing 130mph and it just doesnt feel like that at all, I guess thats to be expected from a car of this ilk.
