....if my car has a DPF. I should know, I would like to know, but cant find any concrete proof ether way!

Its a 2009 E280 CDI Sport estate.

It's exhaust pipes get sooty after I have polished them if thats any indication?

So Mercedes gurus, any way to tell?

I have just looked at the data card and it says "926 EXHAUST GAS CLEANING WITH EURO 4 TECHNOLOGY".

My understanding is that means there is NO DPF. Am I assuming correctly?

And is it good news to have the 926 option, or bad news?

Neither, you just don't have a dpf.

SA code 474 is for a DPF present

In my view it is good news not having a DPF but it suggests your car was manufactured in 2008.

Not surprised if 2008, was registered early 2009.
