Had my first go with a clay bar on the W126 today. Looks ok I think.

hi smoothrider

now that is impressive , must have taken ages for you to do but really worth the effort

regards

that looks superb!

mind you that 126 would look superb if it was filthy:thumb:

I keep looking at these which kit did you use and how did you find it ? I have heard so many horror stories with using clay bars of scratch paint work etc I am not sure

I was nervous about using a clay bar the first time.
I bought a Megiurs clay bar kit. Read the instructions, watched a few tutorials on YouTube, was extremely cautious to start, but have not looked back since.
Have now done 7 cars since all with excellent results.
Just be careful, take your time and enjoy it. The results are well worth it.

Ps: remember to keep the clay bar lubricated. In my view to much spray lubricant is better than not enough (that's when problems occur)

image2000uk the clay worked fine for me. I applied light pressure and kept well lubed. When it dragged in one place I just lubed more. Finish is like satin now.

Clay is superb

When you say horror stories and scratched paint I would assume the user did not wash his car prior to claying or that he may have dropped the clay and carried on using it! If you drop the clay bar its basically knackered from that point on as grit will be embedded in it.

I have clayed three of my cars to date and all three had a smooth mirror finish, in fact one garage came up to me and said "wow how did you get a shine like that?" Clayed cars look like they've been polished with no polish on them. Give it a go you'll love it.

Halfords stock 4 or 5 brands, I opted for the auto-glm kit and in my opinion you don't need an expensive micro fibre cloth, micro fibre cloths from Home bargains are 3 for £1 and worked just as good.

I cut my 100g bar into two as it was plenty big enough.

Wow are you sure those pictures weren't taken from the archive when the car was new?

It looks stunning and if anything probably better than the day it rolled out of the showroom.

Did you bother with Iron-X or any Tar Remover?

What wax/polish combination did you use after claying?

Thanks for the compliment. The pictures are genuine, I took them the other day.

I didn't use Iron X, but will give it a go next time I deep clean.

Post clay, I used AutoGlym Super Resin Polish followed by AutoGlym Extra Gloss Protection.

Next time I'm going to try out a Carnauba Wax on top of the EGP, I've read that the second coat is a detailers trick to get depth of shine.

Thanks for the compliments.

Really nice! Working up to my first clay also, little nervous to practising on an old car first! I take it you fold it several times for each panel, or just the once after each panel?

Just lovely, well done Smoothride. The car is a credit to you. Hard to beat a clean looking 126 imo.

You're welcome, it is definitely well deserved, I've seen brand new Ford's which older than this paint wise.

Nice combination for post clay that, I didn't clay my dads W211 today (leave it for another day) but polished the car with AutoGlym Super Resin Polish then topped off with DoDo Juice Purple Haze Wax, the shine is very good now but no pics as it is dark now.

A wax on top would give it a warm depth as Sealants lack that warmth, are you on detailing world at all?

Thanks for he compliments, Im glowing, but not as much as the W126!

Hot Jambalaya - I just kind of folded out a few times as dirt built up on the clay.

MLAM I'm not on detailing world!

Thanks for the comments guys!

It looks absolutely magnificent. I used to have a smoke silver w126 500SE, how I miss that car...

Do you know how this works if the car has been "supaguarded"?

I am keen to try, but on a car where I can see the effect.
