So I got sent this link by a buddy today (apologies, it's the Daily Mail):

Sales of new petrol and diesel cars could be banned in TWELVE years' time to fight climate change | Daily Mail Online

And it just made me so cross. I applaud the sentiment, and I am 100% in favour of reducing carbon emissions, but REALLY - is our government so bloody out of touch that they simply don't realise how impossible a 2032 ("or even 2030") target is?

I don't need to go on about infrastructure, lack of power stations and lack of lithium on here as we all know. But is our government really so clueless that they think this could EVER be remotely doable in ten years?

It take several years to design and build a single power station. We need loads of them! 10 years is NOTHING when talking about a project like this.

I just can't believe politicians can stand up and make these statements with a straight face. if they did it in a business environment, the board of directors would fire them for not having a grasp of reality.

I know it's been done to death already, but I just had to rant.

With apologies...

One of the problems as I see it is going to be a dearth of IC cars and RVs being unaffordable for poorer people who need a car for getting to work. Are they expected to use piss poor public transport while the wealthier can not only afford to buy an EV but continue to fly to anywhere they choose as often as they want, heat huge homes, and generally do as they please without any environmental concern?

Will we end up with a personal carbon allowance? If you had to choose - what would you deem essential and what could be shorn? For certain, unless you are a paid pilot, my need for a car is greater than your need to fly - no matter who you are.

Rant echoed! What percentage of the population will be able to afford a new electric car? They will of course hang on to their ICE vehicle - then watch the government increase car tax to stupid levels to persuade people "go electric". Which they can't afford, even with trade-up as ICE 2nd hand values will have plummeted....

Again, the people who make decisions have simply no concept of what life is like for "normal people"

The biggest problem I see is that They haven’t consulted anyone from the industry before making such plans. Irresponsible and damaging.
Here is the current (at the time of posting) pollution level here compared to pollution levels in SE Asia.
‘nough said.

But that's where all the stuff we consume is made. So, we either end up increasing production (and pollution) closer to home if SE Asia's pollution is to be curbed or, we do without.
I'm not convinced that China wants to be the dirty man of the world for ever more. So we have to choose - production/pollution closer to home or do without the cheap goods we have become accustomed to? And that, for the poorest, is another can of worms.

It won't all suddenly change in 15yrs, just one won't be able to purchase a new car.
What's ne clear is will manufacturers be able to sell cars already produced and in the supply change?

Where are car manufacturers going to buy all those Lithium batteries for mass production of EVs. China
Where are Chinese sourcing the Lithium from. China, Bolivia, Congo, Zimbabwe, Mali
I think I can see the pattern here. Let’s pollute as much as possible China (as highly populated and developed) and other low developed countries preferably in Africa and South America so we can all drive zero emission cars and feel good for saving the planet.
I’m just waiting not to be allowed to eat meat and start grazing.

To answer your question "Is our government so out of touch.." I say probably , yes. Boris is going ahead with HS2 , Huawei 5G , thinking of putting people he sacked into the House of Lords instead of scrapping the house of Lords.

Putting aside the question of why should he not do these things (that is covered on the politics bit on here) These are highly contentious issues. Add the OP's concerns to this and I can see Boris following his hero Sir Winston Churchill into history.

Immediately after the second world war - which arguably was only won because of Churchill - his party was voted out and he was unceremoniously dumped out of power.

Couldn’t agree more. China’s contributes over 30% of the World’s carbon emissions compared to the UK’s 1%. So instead of everyone here being screwed into the ground to save 1% would it not be easier to stop buying Chinese goods

That, and other things we could relinquish at zero cost or delay - is where our thinking should be.

Someone mentioned meat. I survive (slimmer and more healthily than most meat eaters) without meat. Without a car, I'm stuffed.

Talking of meat......
The internet consumes vast amounts of electricity - on a par with a medium sized developed country. At any given time, 47% of internet traffic is pornography. We'll end up vvanking at the bus stop if we don't get this greening malarkey right.

That’ll make a massive difference with the UK accounting for 2% of China’s exports!

Well this is all going to end in tears,I can fill my diesel car up in 3 mins 20 seconds the computer says I have over 500 miles range, today I read in the online What Car that they have a all electric car on long term test, the driver needed to charge the car up on a trip he used the fastest charge point and it took over a hour to get 83 percent charged, what happens when more than half the motorists using our roads need the same, maybe they will enrol in on line courses to learn a language while the car charges ,can you imagine service stations chaos with electric cars, maybe hotels will get more business from drivers waiting to charge their cars, companies will spring up to put your car on charge when while you sleep when a charge point becomes available.

What do you propose as an alternative then?
