If you were to move on from your current AMG, what would you buy next?

I appreciate that every bodies circumstances are different, but given if you had more money, or did a sideways move, what would you have next? Obvious factors may be lifestyle, children, age etc etc.

My current thoughts;

A bit more money - RS6 V10 Avant

A chunk more money - Panamera Turbo / Current E63

Sideways move (no or little extra money), family, space etc.. - Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Jules.

I quite fancy a VXR8 whether it be the standard or the Barthurst edition as an upgrade

My mates got one of these, and although iv only had a fairly short blast in it, id have to say that this would be the best move upwards.

We took my car and his down some back roads the other night and his was just next level altogether.

They drink petrol like there no tomorrow though.

I moved sideways from a Cayenne Turbo to an M6 and now the CLS55. Looking upwards in terms of cost I was considering an Aston Martin V8 Vantage, 997 Carrera 4S or CL63 AMG. Audi RS4 was a consideration but all Audis are just a bit dull (R8 excluded) IMO. Drove a friends V10 RS6 and it's ridiculous in terms of straight line speed.

For me Jules...the next step up would surely be an R8 V10...would need to be few years old, FSH, cherished, oh and of course Black lol

I don't think Audi has the prestige of MB, but I can live with that when listening to the V10 roar :)

If I had kids would buy a cheap run around C-Class for school runs...

How did you find the M6 compared to the CLS55?

The interior of the CLS is a nicer place to be. The V10 in the M6 wasn't great for driving around town - not enough torque and the SMG gearbox a bit harsh. That said I do miss the precision of the shifts compared to the AMG and the handling of the BMW was considerably better. Fuel consumption a bit better with the Mercedes - takes the sting out of filling up but not by much!

I did also consider a Maserati Gran Turismo and another Bentley (CGT) but I had an urge for an AMG.

Good feedback.

The RS6 is a beast even as standard, but once remapped up to and over 700bhp they are superb......very tempting in 12 months time....

Cayenne was great though terrible on tyres and fuel. Ride was harsh on 20" wheels though does make it handle like a car rather than a 4x4. Bore-scoring issue to be aware of if you're considering one.

Can you expand on the bore scoring issue?

I changed my Vantage for a C63 (more space for kids/bike).
I'll probably go back to two car route. A S3/Golf Gti and a Lotus variant.

Other options I would look at Maserati Granturismo, looks and sound great...although questionable reliability....they are dropping value like flies!

Maserati Granturismo V8 2dr Auto Coupe 4.2 2008

R8 V10
Audi R8 5.2 FSI Quattro 2dr V10 COUPE 2009

RS6
Audi 5.0T FSI V10 RS6 Quattro 5dr Tip Auto Avant 2009 although I don't do hearses....

Bentley GTC, thought I would throw a Black Bentley in :)
Bentley Continental Gt 6.0 W12 2dr Auto Gt Coupe 2004

Also like this...value for money award winner!
Mercedes-Benz CL Class CL 500 5.5 2dr cost over £80,000 when new 2008

The devaluation on these cars makes them all tempting future buys....

Great post, some corkers there :D

The V10 RS6 is unbelievably quick but it left me feeling a bit numb to be honest; I like a bit of drama when I plant my foot but they are that planted there was no drama at all. My friends estate returned single figures mpg around town and I don't think he ever got above 18mpg on a run (I know it's not such a big thing but it does become tiresome filling up a lot)

I'm not a Porsche fan at all but I find the Panamera strangely alluring...

The problem most, if not all, 55K owners have is that it's such a good engine that there seems no 'upgrade' for your next car.

Can you expand on the bore scoring issue?

On the Cayenne there was a VIN range where the oil scavenge rings were fitted upside-down, however bore-scoring seems common across 996, 996, Cayman and Cayenne to some extent. Misfire at idle (assuming coil packs are good) is usually a sign. Plenty of specialists to talk to (Olly might know given he worked for them) like SVP.

An RS6 V10 is an obvious alternative especially for me as I need an estate but I always understood that a 55K was quicker (in the dry anyway). Obviously if modded then that's another story. I drove one of the previous V8 RS6's as it was the car I always thought I wanted, but then drove an E55 and no comparison. The Audi went straight off my list.

For me I think I will have to hold out for a biturbo E63 (estate of course!!) and then remap it. I know it will be a long wait but to be honest I keep looking at cars on the road and there is very little that I would swap my current E55 for, especially now it has a few mods, not much comes close without spending pretty serious money.

I think standard 55 v RS6 V10 I would say the RS6 is quicker, mapped & pulley 55 would change that, but mapped RS6 would destoy a mapped & pullied 55.

The current E63 I do agree, but is a couple of years away from the RS6 on depreciation for me.

Jules.
