get some " old man " strings on the next pair, makes you look like an old duffer but saved me a fortune !!

Sorry........but no....you have to have certain standards!!! Glasses on strings is one step away from elasticated waste trousers and only 2 from the coffin!. I'd be buying lots more glasses before I stooped that low!!!!

Think glasses likely to be in the past for me! Just been told that I have fast growing cataracts needing lens replacement. More than 2 years wait here in Wales for NHS operation. Have appointment with a private specialist next Monday, hoping to be able to sort both long and short sight with a lens replacement, albeit at a cost 😂

Funny you should say that....the 4d scan I had during my eyetest the Friday before last revealed that I have the early stages of cataracts in both eyes....not what I wanted to hear at 55. Not affecting my sight at all yet....in fact my prescription had not changed since before Covid....which was a surprise. Got a few years before I need to worry about them though according to the optician.

I wonder if it's a new trend for opticians to report this. I was told the same at my last eye test, as were a lot of other people I've spoken to. I can't believe there's been a sudden outbreak of early stage cataracts! Specsavers. by any chance?

Do it .... say you're an academic, if anyone comments.

And what's wrong with elasticated trousers? One of the finest inventions of the 20th century and a perfect example of both form and function.

... and a perfect solution to the expanding waist due to alcoholic enjoyment.

Hi , I have an annual eye test ( I am 72 ) and again all OK and legally allowed to drive without glasses.

However , on long drives my eyes can sometimes feel tired , so I spoke to the eye guy who said variable focal might help but no guarantees.

Without doubt my vision is better but and it's a big but that they really take getting use to.

The glasses have to fit exactly and I have to point my head at what I am looking at for the subject to be totally in focus rather just keep my head still and move my eyes.

These frames / glasses where not really expensive but would I purchase this combination again , don't really know but please be aware that variable focal lens take time to get use to.

Hi there Boyband,

Whilst my eyesight is pretty good, I'm glad I ran over the glasses and I haven't replaced them.
Whilst it helped with pin sharp eyesight in those dark, rainy conditions I used them for, the rest of the time it made my eyes lazier, and then I found I was struggling a tiny bit e.g. sitting at the back of the room for a presentation.
I ditched the glasses (which subsequently got crushed, or maybe I ditched them because they got crushed  ) and I've been managing better on balance since.
I've kept up 2 yearly eye tests, which have been stable for quite a while now. For 10 or 15 years, which is when I started getting them tested.

Not Specsavers , we have moved house and gone to a well regarded independent optician locally. My wife has just had a new pair of varifocals from them and says they are the best she has had in years, both frames and the sight . Mind you she did choose real Horn frames which combined with the very best lenses cost me a kings ransom, but it was a worthwhile investment
I however had noticed a quick deterioration in my sight with both my contact lenses and using my varifocals, my right eye has gone from -8.75 to -11.0 in 24 months so I know that there’s a problem.
I was told a couple of years ago I had the beginnings of cataracts, just wasn’t expecting them to become a problem as quickly. I will find out tomorrow evening what my options are and how big a hit on my bank balance 😂

Just to update this ... I managed to trash another pair of glasses yesterday by standing too close to a bonfire - the heat damaged both lenses :fail: It's a tough life out in the country :D

Never had this happen before, even when I've been close enough to singe my hair. I've got a polycarbonate face shield that I wear for strimming & brushcutting ... will use that next time. A lot cheaper to replace if it melts.

I'm amazed you could stand close enough to do that....have you got skin made of asbestos!!??

Plastic lenses?

Plastic lenses?

Possibly, they are optional 'thin & light' ones which I have because of my strong prescription (otherwise they're really thick at the edges). It's possible that the surface coating was damaged rather than the lenses themselves ... hard to tell.

Maybe not as naff and nerdy as having strings attached to the frame arms I have seen glasses that split in the middle and are held together by a magnet when in use. On second thoughts that seems even more nerdy!

I'm trying very hard not to form mental pictures of trousers with an elasticated waste system.

LOL....stoopid phone! WAIST!
