Hi,

I saw a black w124 with 18 inch version of these alloys, looked sooo nice.

Just wondering what is the actual name, part #, etc. What sizes they come in etc.

Many many thanks in advance.!

P.S. The last photo is one I took of the actual car I saw, maybe these were replicas? Are replicas much cheaper, how well made are they???

Style II's i think , look like replicas too, i stand too be corrected.

Sizes, better visit/chat to Murray systems whose a member here

Thanks guys!

Yeah, they're AMG SL (Style I) 2-PC as stated on the hartwheels site.

Murray systems doesn't seem to have them, only the normal version.

Maybe if you read this murray, you could give me advise on purchasing these alloys, etc.

Thanks.

If you don't want genuine AMG's (and the cost) there are reps for sale on ebay all the time .....

Thank you very much guys!

Which would u guys recommend for a w124, and which tyres sizes. Some pros and cons if possible, e.g. speedo % inaccuracy, etc etc.

I have AMG styling II reps on mine 7.5 x 17 inch

tyre size 225/45/17 all round ....

18's will ruin the ride of the car , it will slam and crash in potholes , 17's are the best bet TBH.....

As long as you keep the 'rolling diameter' the same , there should be no speedo inaccuracy. ie. when you move up a wheel size, you need to drop a tyre profile size (or thereabouts) to keep the rolling diameter the same ....

Andy_k has 16's on his i believe and reckons it rides lovely .....

Thats a real shame you think 18s will 'ruin' the ride quality. I think 18s are the best suited size in terms of looks.

Explain what other disadvantages 18s (with very low profile tyres) will pose besides crashing on potholes.

Also, what are the best lowering options for a w124 (facelift 94-96)?? Would a good set of lowering springs suffice, or would I need to go for good dampners, etc?

Many thanks for your input guys!

18s will tramline more, especially on concrete motorways, as well as crash in potholes.

18's look out of proportion ....

You start to enter the world of the chav with 18's on a w124 .....

The trick is to keep it looking modded but OEM ....

Think of it this way , AMG and Brabus never put 18's on a w124 ..... ;)

optimum tyre size for w124 series

The optimum size for the w124 series to retain good ride characteristics and improved handling without body mods would appear to be 205/55/16 or 225/50/16 on 7-7.5J rims IMHO. Remember the suspension was designed in the 1980,s and only slightly modified over the years. ;) You probably wont achieve much better performance by moving to year 2000+ tyre technology since the suspension characteristics are optimised for an older generation of tyres. They have the advantage of being more robust to damage, wear well and are generally cheaper to buy.:D They also "FIT" the vintage of the car and avoid the "chav" effect:eek:  for more info see http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html
edit:- even the firebreathing 500E with flared arches only ran 225/55ZR16 on 8Jx16 8 hole alloys first and latterly the e500 245/45ZR17 tyres on 8.25Jx17 six spoke alloys from the 190e 2.5-16 evo2 so unless you have a V8 with 326bhp and 365lb ft of torque ??

stick with the 16" rims - a W124 looks "right" and drives well on them.

The W124 models handle pretty well but not exceptional by todays standards. The 4 cylinder models are prone to oversteering whereas the 6 cylinder ones will do the opposite and understeer. However, with a little spirited driving you can get either type on three wheels if you try hard enough - to avoid earache this is a trick best not performed in an estate car with partner, 2 kids, 2 dogs and a load of shopping in the car :D

Thanks for your input guys!

I disagree about the 18s being too big. If you look at the image attached I think they 'beef' up the look of the car. This is the maximum size I would go for, as any bigger would definetely look 'CHAV'! I would consider 17s, but 16s are too small IMO.

Could I have some advice on the 18 inch setup with a lowered ride height of maybe 35mm-40mm??? Tyre size recs., etc?

You guys are great, keep up the great work and fantastic forum.
P.S. Please don't think i'm a chav! :(
