hi

The alfa has failed its MOT on the rear backbox of the exhaust. The backbox is double-skinned and the outer skin is rusted badly, however the inner skin is 100% and is not leaking gas anywhere.

the mount is currently welded to the outer skin so its failed (i think) because the mount isnt adequatly supporting the box and the box is excessivly corroded.

As there is no gas leaks and a new cheap box is £90 for part only and more for a decent one, i am hoping to fix up the current one.

I was thinking of making up a steel strap that wrapped around the box and then went into a hook arrangement that held on in the usual way with rubbers....

can anyone see any problems or issues with this?

cheers

+1. That should work. I had mine fixed 20,000 miles ago and it's still going strong.

The only stipulation for an MOT on a backbox is that it is adequetely supported, has no major leaks and is not excessively noisy. Any mounting that is fitted must be secure , how this is done doesn't matter- I'd take off the corroded outer skin, or trim it off, get a strap of some sort that mounts on to the original hanger on the car and it will pass.

hi again. thanks for your responses.

Just to clarify, i've attached a diagram of the system. the purple line is the floor of the car. the black box is the backbox and the red is the exisiting metal clamp that goes under the backbox and allows the rubber mounts to hook it onto the underside.

the bit at the bottom centre of the backbox (in light blue) is where it used to be welded to the box, but the outer skin is rusted away so its loose, but as it cradles the box, its still very secure.

if i put a strap around the box and the metal mount so that it cant move at all will that be good enough?

cheers!

Derek

Yep, that'd do, although I'd snip off all the outer skin to make it neat.

Tiff, dont suppose you know anywhere around here that sells a suitable strap?

i thought about a couple of extra-large jubliee clips from B&Q?

Should be good with that done, as long its secure. You can buy actual bendable strips for that job, i cant remember where from though, try a motor factors or Halfords or somewhere. I think i seen an article on Blue Peter about something similar once.

taken another look at this today. There is a small "lip" on the edge of the box that i think i should be able to weld the mount to.... here's hoping

Any half-decent builders merchant will sell Bat Straps. They're galvanised drilled steel used for holding down roofs but are ideal for fabricating all sorts of brackets.

Get down to Partco and ask for Dexi-Strip- perfect for the job, or have a look at a BMW Mini rear box strap, may be modifyable..

Hi

i ended up welding it and it passed. :bannana:

downside on the return journey back home i drove over a glass dagger type thing that destroyed the rear tyre.

so had to go to a local tyre place and get a new tyre fitted. :wallbash:
