How would that work though, it was a classified ad etc so how would they be able to scam anyone, I mean you'd have to go along to see the car , there was no bidding etc.

Very simple, persons desperate to buy/secure the car (great deal) get asked for a deposit to secure.

You do this with xx buyers for xxxx pounds and suddenly the scammer is quids in and on their way.
