I'm really starting to loathe my 18" AMG alloys

Regardless of curbing, the Diamond cut wheels can look awful after a few years just from stone chips damaging the lacquer. Just had mine refurbished and went for a shadow chrome powder coating instead. Look better and hopeful won't go down the same level of deterioration as diamond cutting.

Hey, could I see a pic? I was thinking of doing the same thing!

Here’s the Conti vs budget... tried to show the difference best i could. There are other tyres with even more pronounced lips, although I actually think no lips looks best, but who cares really.

Yes, I know they needed a clean. No, I didn’t curb these, the previous owner did. Yes I know they need a refurb!

I have found that the tilting side mirror does make the gap look bigger than it really is. However, I rarely reverse park my car (park assist does it for me).

Thanks so much - they look really good, and lighter than many I’ve seen. I always loved the shadow chrome finish on BMW e39 M5s, and this is similar but perhaps even lighter

As I have a grey car (palladium silver... aka metallic gunmetal grey), the wheels need to be light to give some contrast, and ultimately I like an OEM look.

Did you get them done in Norfolk?

Thanks again for the pics!

What was the cost of each option, the other being diamond cutting ?

Wheels look very nice indeed.

Silver is a safe winner .

Quite like this darker shade against Palladium , may help to hide a bit the dreaded dust .

I too was getting the dreaded lacquer bubbles on my diamond cut wheels, so I took went powder coated. I used The Wheel Specialist and it was £75 per wheel plus £10 per wheel balancing +VAT, so it was £408 all in including VAT. It was a 24 hour turn around, dropped the car off at 4pm and picked it back up the next day at 4pm all done. They did a really good job. I went for black wheels.

I think diamond cut refurb is about £140 a wheel so almost double.

Mine were £295 all in for the four wheels including tyre removal, valves, refitting and balancing.

Didn't ask about doing cut option as I knew I didn't want that regardless of cost

Have you had a really close up view of the quality of the finish ? I assume it will be silky smooth

Trouble is with black on black is the wheel is visualy kinda hidden - looks small .

Tiny bit of brake dust and the gloss is gone , plus you'll be a slave to tyre black..

They all say it is 12”...

There's an old and very terrible joke about that....and before I repeat it, it did make me laugh when I first heard it...in the vein (lol) of that anything can be funny in abstract...N.B. P.C. Police...I DO NOT CONDONE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN!!!

So,she said "Give me 12" and make me bleed big boy!" So, I f****d her twice and punched her in the nose." Boom Boom! Errrrr maybe sorry!!

Repeat, abs no sympathy with the idea of doing so!!

Did mine as badly scuffed on one and others all pitted and some small scuffs...Had done at Tintex in Portsmouth..great job! Good guys! Recommended by Olly at PCS. I know rest of car needs some loving to! Am getting wrapped as cannot afford re-spray...you can vote on colour in other thread here

WRAP COLOUR VOTE!

Meanwhile, did calipers silver as well as didn't want stand out colour. Good price too...Andy who did the job is a pleasant guy too.

How does that happen? I've never had stone chipping on my wheels!

Believe it or not, that was the original reason for rim protection on tyres, to prevent stone chips, nothing to do with kerbs. A kerb will just push the tyre wall in & damage the wheel anyway unless it's a very minor scrape.

Just google "diamond cut alloys white worm", and you'll find page upon page of what happens. Because the diamond cut face is the actual alloy with lacquer on top, it only takes the tiniest pin hole in lacquer from a stone chip for the alloy to be open to the elements and start to corrode. What happens then is the corroding then worms under the lacquer, hence the "white worm" nickname.

With alloys that are painted, you have a primer coat, a colour coat, and a lacquer coat to get through before you get to the alloy. With powder coating you have the powder coat (which is harder wearing) and a lacquer.

My wheels are less that 3 years old with zero curb damage and each one had dots of bubbling appearing.
