Hi Everyone
I have not been on the forum for a few months. Have I missed much

Has anybody imported a used car from Germany.
How difficult is it
Will I have to pay German or UK VAT

It is easy. VAT is payable in the UK on the book value of the car as far as I know.

With the cars I have imported from Holland for myself,I have been able to be VAT exempt because they were in my name in Holland for over 6 months.
Just drive the car over, go to your local DVLC office and get it registered. Youdo need all the Foreign registration papers though.

Cheers

UK VAT, dependant upon the age of the car. You can run into problems with Type Approval, and need SVA (unless it's a pretty mainstream model).

Changes needed to lights and instruments (plus possibly the horn).

You'll need the original registration document to get the car re-registered over here; but apart from the red tape, it's relatively straightforward.

Hi Mart - hope you and Jude are well;) Jude will be happy - lots of SLKs on the forum inlcuding some R171s and a couple of 55 AMGs too:eek: Matt's been having fun as usual but for the rest you'll just have to catch up:devil:

So do tell - what's this all about or is it a big secret?

There's a couple of GTGs on the go if you fancy coming along;)

Hi Pammy
No secret I fancy buying a G500 but RHD one's in the UK are rare and expensive.
I already own 2 LHD vehicles and don't find them a problem.

aah - now that would be cool!! to say the least:devil: :D You'll have to keep us informed of progress if you go through with it.;)

For cars over 6 months old you shouldn't have anything to pay as German VAT should have already been paid. You only need to have proof that it was paid. You will also need a set of red export plates as it is very likely the dealer/owner will keep their number plate.
