I do c35k miles a year and from time to time avoid accidents which were not my fault or see crazy drivers else where.

What is everyones view on an in car dash camera? Do they work, have they helped in the event of an incident and what one should I buy?

Interested to see peoples views on this given the number of non fault claims being disputed.

Scott

I have a Blackvue HD - it works and is hidden behind the rear-view mirror. Not had to use it as result of accident, but occasionally we get an email from the local policeman asking if anyone has seen a van/truck parked in suspicous circumstances, and I've pulled the number plate for one.
Sometimes hard to read number plates with closing speed of 120mph (60+60), but usually ok. I get a lot of reflection off the screen (needs adjusting perhaps but you can't get rid of it all).
I have pondered however that a rear facing camera is possibly of equal use as a front facing camera, and ideally you'd want to cover both (which a lot of people do).

I run front and rear cameras on my daily driver and whilst they have not saved me insurance wise, footage from them has resulted in the Police taking action against 2 drivers who were driving dangerously and caught on my cameras.

Both are discreet behind RVW and side of high level brake light, so not obscuring vision.

hopefully (or not) one day they will prove I was not at fault in any incident

it's also amazing what they capture when the car is in the dealer ;)

Thanks guys. I'm thinking I might just buy one.

Do these things need professional installation then?

Scott

Hi,

Just to let you know that we have schemes that offer discounts for certain in car cameras.

Regards,

Dan.

Thanks Dan.

What are the specification / camera requirements or criteria you look for?

I'm still running my original cameras, the ones I ordered had no back up power as we discussed so in impact if the wiring came out you would lose capture. So I sent them back still looking for something suitable as most of the commercial makes are just rip off money. Will let you all know when I find something but I'm currently considering the same set up as a traffic car front and rear facing into a black box with SSD and usb interface for download. Just need to find the time to sort it

Only after the impact though, so would it matter?

I recently fitted roadhawk hd, front facing.
Great quality during the day, bit worse at night but still acceptable.
Easy enough to fit, and very inconspicuous.

..... people do not give way to big yellow trucks throwing sh#t out the back of them, making a mess of the roads, causing stone chips and corrosion to millions of cars.

Fixed that for you.

Strange how they don't give way to you... :dk:

Ive had a few incar cctv cameras fitted over the years.
They have got better and cheaper too.
My current ones are these
HD 1080P car dvr camera 2.7" LCD recorder Video Dashboard vehicle Cam G-sensor | eBay
Can be found from uk sellers for more or less the same money.
I have one behind the rvm and the rear one is sat to the right of the high level brakelamp on the rear shelf.

Not needed them in anger apart from when my car was damaged whilst being mot'd and the camera caught all the action of the mot assistant not being able to shut the bonnet and having a bit of a mad time trying to punch it shut instead of lifting it slightly and just dropping it shut.

these do look quite handy - but the extra wires and such like might turn me off them - any clever ideas for making it look neater?

Interesting,
Do you know of better way of de-icing the roads?
If so, might be a million or two to be made there.

Only thing you see on mine are the cameras with the wires heading behind the trim around the windows.
They both are powered by a 12volt to 5v converter that I got for a few £'s on ebay and thats wired to the aux power on the ignition switch.

Hey, I'm all up for gritting when it's necessary, but randomly chucking crap over the roads repeatedly when it's "alittle chilly" takes the pi$$!
