in car dash cameras - what's your views on them?

I'm not sure I would want a dash cam in my car. The amount of crashes I've seen on YouTube.....they seem to be crash magnets! Ha Ha

Underfloor heating? :p

Fast and Furious style? lol
Or even better, foot-friction Flinstones style ;)

Jokes aside, it never fails to amaze me how other countries cope with winter (Fins, etc.).
Personally, I have been using winter tyres and they do make massive difference in grip, something that real wheel drive struggle with in snow.

And regarding gritting, did you know that it doesnt actually work below -6 C?

Hey, I'm all up for gritting when it's necessary, but randomly chucking crap over the roads repeatedly when it's "alittle chilly" takes the pi$$!

Its to do with the liability.
If there is a risk of temperature drop, the maintaining agent has a duty to prep the road.
It gets icy, you crash your car, and then it turns out it wasn't being gritted despite severe weather warning.
Who do you think your insurer will try to claim of?

I hear you bud.
I don't dispute what you're saying.
It's just the repeated gritting for no reason that gets me.
They literally throw the stuff down through fear of being claimed against.
90% of people don't care what's on the road or how damaged their cars get.
But for the small percentage of car enthusiasts, it is infuriating

They really do grit when there is no need.

Regarding gritting not working below -6.. It's completely unnecessary above +1 too!

I purchased a Blackvue HD after an altercation with the BiB and could’nt prove my speed plus a light bump which resulted in a £13000 claim! (Slid on ice into a van at less than 5 mph & both occupants claimed 4500 each whiplash) Insurance Co not interested grrr
Anyway sits up behind rvm wired into cig lighter and is completely autonomous, recording on a loop of about 35 hrs. (Quality dependent)
Used footage for bus going through red light plus video evidence for a car bike collision which occurred in front of me (Car driver denied everything until video appeared!)
Plus get a 10 % discount from a well known insurer AF.
Gives me piece of mind - everyone should have one!

I recently fitted roadhawk hd, front facing.
Great quality during the day, bit worse at night but still acceptable.
Easy enough to fit, and very inconspicuous.

I'm about to purchase the same unit as soon as they come back into stock. Is yours hard wired? If so how is this actually done?

There are two cables you need to run to the camera.
1 - power
2 - GPS receiver

I gently pulled the upholstery above the windscreen, and fed both cables in there.
Then, they run underneath the door seal. GPS is hidden in the passenger foot-well, and power cable runs under passenger floor mat.

All in all, you can only see cable by the camera, and where I plug it to the cigarette lighter socket.
Took about 10 min to do.

The road hawk seems a bit steep considering you can get blackvue cameras for a fair bit less which have integrated gps as well (not had any problems with gps signal strength/accuracy so far) so only the power cable on the side and one cable to feed through the trim to the power supply. The units are smaller than the road hawk as well and I'm really impressed with the quality of the video and audio from my blackvue 380g hd.

I've run a Blackvue HD for nearly a year now.

TBH I forget it's there, must wap the card out and make sure it's still working as I've not checked the card for 6 months or so now!

Out of interest, if you have one, are stopped speeding and plod notices your camera, can he seize the card as evidence etc?

Strictly speaking anything can be seized as evidence of an offence.

Trouble is you will probably need one at the back with all the crash for cash stuff.

Quite right. Have had a forward cam for almost a year, but you always want to see what led up to an incident or happend after, and invariably that leaves you wanting a rear view too. Which is why a lot of the e-bay sellers sell them in pairs. No doubt then you'd want side views - before long you'd have a google street-view camera on the roof... or just get on with life.

Why is that? Generally if someone hits you up the chuff (ooh err missus) they are considered at fault.

I ask because I have a forward facing camera only.

Hi,

Just to let you know that we have schemes that offer discounts for certain in car cameras.

Regards,

Dan.

Dan, I'm guessing we need a policy with AF to get a discount?

Hi to Everybody,

If you have an interest in DOD dashboard cameras our internet-shop can develop a special discount programme if you gather at least 10 devices in one batch/order.
Please feel free to ask me
We do not sell fake products and we operate from The Netherlands
I suggest you have a look at DOD LS430, our top model (GPS, Full HD, 2.7" screen)

It's a shame that you give no technical information about this product - not even the dimensions.
