Jet blaze man escapes jail
21 September 2004
A man who set fire to a pornographic magazine on a passenger plane at 30,000ft has walked free from court.
David Mason, 45, used a lighter to torch handfuls of torn up paper under his seat on a flight in February from Norway to Gatwick as terrified fellow travellers looked on.
Mason, from Langley Avenue in Surbiton, Surrey, claimed he suddenly became "offended" by the images and felt compelled to burn them. He admitted endangering the Boeing 737 and its passengers at a hearing last month and was given a two-year conditional discharge by Judge Richard Hayward at Hove Crown Court. He was ordered to pay £263 in costs.
