In praise of Autoglass

Do they connect with the ECU ( Re Mapping ) when they re-calibrate ?

Autoglass will never touch any of my cars. They are a complete rip off. They charge a fortune compared to your local windscreen independent. Im sure some will say 'ahh but its my insurance company that pays'. Yes it is but they recoup those costs in the premiums we all pay.
I got quotes from Audi and Merc. The thing is, I would have to pay from my own pocket if I wanted to go with the dealer who would outsource the job to specialist company anyway. It's much easier and cheaper to just pay excess on insurance. Someone asked if they are counted as claim. Apparently now insurance companies put them in database as windscreen claim. My renewal from Admiral have info about one claim but not the other. Looks like the other one slipped through the system somehow. Also, Admiral upped the excess to £95.

They did use an OBD device when recalibrating the camera. Don't remember which system they were using.

As for it being my car my choice. That is true I guess.

We recently had a chip repair, but I paid Autoglass directly rather than go through my insurer. They may say that it doesn't affect NCB but I reckon it does affect your claim history and therefore increases the underlying premium. Not worth the risk for me.

How much was it for the chip repair please Rob if you don’t mind? PM me if you prefer ;)
A rough ball park figure will do.

Cheers

No problem Abs. £130 for one and £160 for two, payable at time of booking. We only needed one repair, so they refunded the difference.

I am insured on all my cars through Adrain Flux. All my cars have similar cover that includes glass on £50 no question excess. So I need new glass? I call uyp and I get new glass that is OEM (if I request that) it is calibrated (if it is required). I have never really had an issue apart from the instance (mentioned in this thread) where Autoglass were gazumped by PIlkington who placed stickers on the glass over the top of some nice deep scratches. Autoglass's response to that was brilliant. They were straight on the phone to Adrain Flux with photographs of the damage and the stickers. Then onto Pilkingtons and MB in Germany. New glass ordered (again), it was Autoglass who said (unprompted) "why dont we replace both at the same time to avoid two trips and double any potential risk" they were fitting a new windscreen on the same day. It was Autoglass who then offered to pay my excess on both screens and NOT charge me for fitting.

The Autoglass fitter then demonstrated his knowledge of 124's by offering (accepted) to remove the front wiper mechanisim to aloow me my own to time to strip and grease it before their return with the new glass. Their fitter had owned a 124.

So check who your broker is, and what your cover is for (exactly for) before you need to use it. My 124 is on agreed valuation classic policy with Adrain Flux as is my C55 Wagon. This gives some additional protection and direct management contact, if required.

It also allowed them to show off to me their fantastic 'extra man' fitting tool. This is brilliant bit of innovation that assists them in fitting big glass single handed (if required) which on the 124 it is. It removes any danger of mastic splatter as it allows them to dry fit the glass in the landing area as many times as they need to practice, with each fitting accurately measured so than when the 'wet fit' is done the glass land absolutely spot on, with zero mess. A brilliant bit of kit that you never get to see (normally) and is not used by all fitters.

We have to be careful of tarring all of Autoglass or anybody else out there with the same brush based on one experience. I have seen local one man bands create a heell of a mes with no back up when they created the mess. With Autoglass they do have a massive organisation and funds if goes wrong, likewise with Halfords and the like.

Get it sorted at source when you insure the car.

Well I have had cause to use Autoglass twice and each time they have done a great job,it is good to see a company giving good service,of course we all hope we do not need them.

They replaced the windscreen (chipped) on my SLK, TWO vans/fitters turned up at my home, took about an hour to fit a genuine Merc part (screen contains the radoi arial) incredibly impressed

there’s a buzzing sound from the windscreen at speeds above 55mph

Autoglass thinks this is caused by there being a gap in the glue line around the windscreen - the air seeping in is causing the buzzing. Seems right to me as the buzzing sound goes away for a bit if I use the windscreen washer system - the liquid blocks the gap for a bit, and the air eventually clears it, with the buzzing round returning

Autoglass is going to redo and fit a new windscreen

Keep an eye on the paperwork, auto glass replaced a screen for me after I found the heating element wasn't working on a new screen they'd fitted the previous day, they only charged my insurance company for two screens which I never found out till insurance renewal time when it was too late to correct it.

I'm going to need the one in my CLS replacing soon as it's cracked on the passenger side and Autoglass are my insurers preferred supplier. Only looking to get an OEM but will it have a Merc logo or something like that on it to identify it? Also, is it easy enough to reset the sensors for the auto wipers/lights?

You'll need prior approval from the insurers before you get the OE screen as they are much more expensive than the pattern left. You might have to pay a contribution.
When I checked the cost for my CLS I was quoted £1200.

£1200!

Are the pattern versions ok as I can't see them wanting to part with that amount. I think my excess is £75 or something like that.

It's always worth an ask...
The pattern screen I had fitted worked fine with the sensors, no problems. Only issue I 'thought' I could see was a very slight ripple in the screen. Not a huge issue and I didn't notice it 99.9% of the time.

R231 SL - windscreen replacement notes

I recently used Autoglass for my replacement 212 screen. Using them was stipulated by the insurance co.

They are in Borehamwood or somewhere like that. Basically very very very north London. Or maybe Herts.

Anyway, the fitters were great and they did a good job including all the recalibration.

I had good experience with Auto Glass no problem what so ever

Got them coming tomorrow to do a windscreen on a Skoda.

Noticed on 3rd it had a large chip, initially they quoted 25th to repair!
Then online we managed to get 10th so a week to repair which surprises me as car is effectively off road.

Will report on repair when done.
