Hello,

I'm looking to install a start stop button in my car and I'm wondering if it is as easy as just buying the button and popping it in or if there is a more complicated process involved?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, it would be an enormous job, and a total waste of time.

For example, if a car stops at traffic lights, the start-stop system switches off the engine. As soon as the clutch pedal is pressed again, or the brake is released in the case of an automatic transmission, the engine starts again immediately - how would you achieve this?

The way stop/start works is governed by engine temperature & ambient temperature.

The starter motor & ring gear should be strengthened to cope with stop/start.

I could go on...

Think you misunderstood what he wanted think it require keyless etc to work option 889

Wont work without keyless go, so unless its just the looks you want probably unrealistic. Easier to buy a car with keyless if you lke it that much (as I do)

As said, the start/stop button is part of the Keyless Go system, and retrofitting the entire Keyless Go system is possible but will cost a small fortune.

If you were considering drilling a hole in the dash and fitting an after-market stop-start button, then I have no idea how you would go about wiring it into the EIS (the existing ignition key module), and I suspect that the wires connecting to the EIS might be modulated over CANBUS, so you'll really need a small ECU to process the signals between the EIS and the front SAM while trying to defeat the car's anti-theft security... not for the faint-hearted, I think.

Thank you for your help, I think as someone else said I was talking about the button you put in the Keyhole. It was my bad explaining so sorry about that.

Yes, I understand. I guess it needs a way to know if the key is inside or outside the car.

I'm good thanks 😂. Maybe I woun't. I guess it needs a way ok knowing where the key is to know it is the owner trying to start the car or not.

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated

There are vids on youtube showing how to do it, you don't need keyless entry but still need to put the key in the ignition, kind of defeats the object tbh.

Now I am confused o_O The stop start button of a keyless entry car can (on some models) be removed showing a place for the ignition key to go in, this is an extra layer of security...that was removed by MB installing keyless go 🤔 . So the OP has an option to buy a button to cover the ignition key hole that will have to be removed to put the key in the hole to start the car ?

Or is there another button on the dash ? as well as a push button to start the car , bit like some Aston Martins and Fiats ? My head hurts :wallbash:

I detail this in full at the start of my video here:

If you don't have this optioned, fitting it will NOT work, you need it coding and also have some of the electrical systems which aren't standard.

Sorry for the confusion.

What I was referring to was installing the button and then not having to use the key to start the car anymore. But as in my case I would still need to use the key this then makes it useless as I do not have the necessary equipment (Keyless Entry/Go) to do this. So I will not be buying it as I wanted it to function as a button and not a cover.

Seems I was confused as well, I thought you just wanted a generic engine start/stop button.

Really sorry I confused everyone.

Yes only referring to possibly fitting a functional Keyless go system instead of using the key but obviously it is a job not possible.

The stop/start button will need to somehow be connected to something in the car that can read the chip in the keyfob, for obvious anti-theft reasons.

So you can either insert the key in the ignition anyway, which as you said will be pointless, or you'll need to retrofit the wireless reader that can sense the presence of your keyfob over the air, which will be expensive.

Yes I understand now. Thank you👍

I will not do it then. Don't know how much longer I will have the car due to milage so it might not be worth it but who knows.

I have it on my car and it doesnt have keyless entry. It just fits in the keyhole and so long as the key is in the car it you just push the button to start or switch off. Downside is that the easy entry exit doesnt seem to work with it. Just a gimmick really but it came with the car.

Just to be clear however, if you car didnt come with it you cant just purchase the switch and it will work.

Two separate things.

Some cars just have 'keyless start', ie a button to start, others have 'keyless entry', or whatever MB call them. Some cars, of course, don't have anything, just like we used to manage with years ago without too much difficulty. It all depends on model, specification, what options selected etc etc..

Good to know. I've sold the car now though so doesn't really apply to me anymore 😂
