I've just signed up with a new insurer for my W124 E300D and they've requested photos of the car! One of each side and interior and engine shots, i could understand if it was worth anything but it seems a little OTT to me for something worth at best £2k

Some insurers ( usually for classic policies ) ask for this .

Probably in the case of your W124 as most current guides only cover up to 10 or so years old so to help arrive at a valuation .

you are going for an agreed car value policy.

if you do not want to protect the agreed value of your vehicle, why not just have 3rd party insurance.

Sounds like an agreed valuation policy, usually aimed at collectors cars. I once did this for an MGB I owned, bought for about £600 had an agreed valuation of £2k, based on the photographic shots.
