My insurance is due soon, and just had the renewal notice.

Gone up from £532 to £636. No claims and nothing else had changed.

When I rang them they were at first as confused as I was, then the penny dropped when she realised that the Insurance Group for an E320 CDI had gone up from 16 to 18.

This is supposed to be due to the rising claims on my type of car.

Anyone else found this and how can I check the revised grouping?

My insurance premium has never gone down, always up every year. I don't think it's going to change either :(

Insurance groupings aren't set in stone, and I didn't think insurers really used them, I thought they were just a general guide for people to use to help choosing a car.

Does that mean the E320 CDI, the W211 e-class or mercedes in general?

Have you tried SAGA for insurance Brian? My parents swear by them, cheapest quote ever! SAGA Motor Insurance.

Motor insurance

Hello Brian
I Just compared SAGA with Churchill using my wife's details, it was only £2 less.
Can you get additional discounts if you have your house insurance with the same company ?
Screentrade could also be worth checking out.

Thanks lads, have started shopping around and will report back later.

I am just in the process of renewing with Sainsbury's after being with Churchills for the last 9 years, I am saving nearly £200.
Tesco's were also very cheap.

Good Luck

Joe

Hi,

It pays to 'shop around'.

Last year cost me (approx) £500 to insure ML270 CDi (Screentrade via Churchill) and renewal this year @ (approx) £700  . Finally insured with Moreth>n at £425 :D . Over 2 years (3 insurance premiums) premiums gone from £525 to £425) :p .

It seems different brokers/insurance companies quote different rates so you just need to persevere to get a good quote  .

Cheers,

Dieter

if you go to auto traders website and click the insurance button under the motoring heading at the top you can enter your details and it checks all the sites and gives you the prices for each company. inc norwich union, morethan etc etc. for my car the quotes varied from £400 to £1400

I went with Tesco's last year as they were about 400quid cheaper than Norwich Union. I had to change my insurance 2 weeks later as some idiot put a stone through the windscreen and damaged the bodywork slightly and Tesco's refused to let the car go to an MB dealer to be repaired. Apparently they would only pay if it went to one of their registered bodyshops which happened to be a company based down the road from us and they have a terrible reputation.
Just make sure you check everthing Brian.

Brian, this year my insurer wanted £683 for an E270cdi, W211 which prompted me to shop around. beleive it or not Direct Line came up trumps at £399, and it was cheaper to have my wife as a driver than not to........never used to be like that!

PS Age 40, and no points and full NCB. The policy was with protected NCB

Thats one of reasons why I am considering going with MB insurance when I renew in a few weeks. Its not exactly cheap though, but if the worst happens and I do have a smash, I would be a lot more comfortable knowing its getting repaired by an MB authorised repairer.

Does direct line let you specify which repairer you can use or is it like Tesco?

You never HAVE to use the approved bodyshop specified by the insurer - they encourage it because it reduces the paperwork and authorisation process - this happened to me 5 years ago when my E240 was in a collision - I just insisted it went to a Merc garage and they complied - just said it would need a visit from an assessor etc - no big deal.

Ironically it turns out that the Merc dealer subcontracts the bodywork to a local independant company anyway - but at least it was all "through" the dealership.

Exactly what I thought Marc. Tesco's point blank refused when I demanded it go to the MB bodyshop and stated that is how it is done in my area.
In the end I told Tesco's to forget it, demanded a full refund which took 4 months and moved back to Norwich Union.
This year my insurance with Norwich union dropped by 350quid so I was well pleased.

I think in Tesco's case it clearly states on the website (in the FAQs) that repairs will be done by a Tesco chosen repairer. If you sign up with them you are tacitly agreeing to this. I havent seen this on other companies websites (not that I have looked that hard).
