Potentially picking up a 2004 ML270 tomorrow and my insurers tell me that it would more than double my premium on a 2003 E240 from approx. £300 to £650!

Checked GoCompare and the quotes I am getting back are not that much different. Do 4WD vehicles really make that much of an impact? Any specialists?

Thanks

We had an ML270 for many years and Directline were very cheap. I know everyone's circumstances are unique but worth a try. I don't think they will have been included in the GoCompare search.

Good luck sorting it though. They're a great car, and it would be a shame if the insurance is the deal breaker for an otherwise good car.

Mine went up from 350/year for my E-Class to >600 for my Land Rover (value of car doubled but I'm certain that factor doesn't have a linear relationship with the premium). As I'm an old fart I never even bother checking insurance groups anymore, so I don't know their respective groupings. Do you know yours?

DirectLine about the same. Must be the 4WD element that impacts? Not a deal breaker, but it did come as a bit of a surprise!

peter best do classic insurance on it

Most of the Comparison sites are owned by insurance companies so check as many of them as you can to get the lowest price.

Make sure you clear your cookies every time you change Comparison sites (or use a secure browser like "Epic"). Not sure they can trace you, but I'm sure they inch the prices up each visit, or maybe that's just my paranoia...

Have you tried us for insurance yet? If you wanted to PM me I'd be happy to arrange a quotation for you.

Kind Regards
Dan

classic is best as u can set agreed value rather normal market value and say it is 5k if stolen damaged u will get the agreed value and this related to replacement value not purchase price

With not knowing your circumstances its difficult to advise on insurance companies but I pay £325 on my 2012 ML350 with Liverpool Victoria.

Standard tricks to reduce premiums (without moving house!) are to reduce your annual mileage, and/or take a higher excess.

Also play tunes with your occupation, there are all sorts of ways to describe what you do, and most of them will affect your premium,

An insurance broker told me that cars kept in garages atract a higher premium than ones left on your driveway (go figure) so thats worth a try.

Value the car lower? Kick the wife GF off the policy if they have an "unfortunate" insurance record? If not, put them on it!

Maybe try a multiple car policy with the rest of the family?
