Well, having had a series of caravans when the kids were younger, we moved on to motorhomes a few years back. I've always insured them via a specialist caravan/motorhome insurer and never had any problems. Paid monthly and renewed at the beginning of September. Shortly after renewing, SWMBO and I decided to sell the motorhome as we weren't getting the use out of it to make it viable (family commitments and other types of holiday were taking priority). We got a reasonable price and were happy with it.

I contacted the insurers last week to cancel the insurance having payed 2 instalments of £34 since renewal. They told me there might be a small additional payment. This "small" payment turned out to be £161:eek:. It appears that UK and overseas recovery is not refundable (£80 for the year), nor is the insurance tax, and they insist on 42% of the annual insurance fee for early cancellation in the first 2 months. So I paid 2 months insurance (2x £34), got 5 weeks cover before cancellation and still owed them £161! They waived the 42% as a goodwill gesture but could do nothing about the rest. So I "only" had to pay £114 extra.

I guess it would have been no better had I payed in full at renewal as they would still have taken all these amounts off before paying me any refund.

Feels like money for old rope for them, and is particularly irritating as I haven't made an insurance claim in 20+ years. Oh well, you live and learn!
