I'm with Directline, paying £1900 a year for my W202 C180 (I'm 19), and they not only said that they won't insure me if I put an induction kit on, they also won't insure me if I have 18" alloys fitted... Are they taking the piss or is this serious??

What other insurance companies are there that aren't so bloody anal about alloys?

tbh - from what I was reading at the weekend - the fact you've got it for £1900 isn't bad as it is!

And yes they will be anal about things like that because it usually - not always, means that it's someone souping up the car to make it perform "better" so increasing their risk.

You will prob be able to get insurance with those mods somewhere but at a higher cost.

I'll look out the article from yesterday's paper and let you know who came out the cheapest.

Found it:
Directline were the cheapest for fully comp - but Endsleigh for TPFT.

Churchill could be worth a punt as could Tesco.

...I don't think that 18" alloys were an option on the c-class - the point being that if alloys 'x' were a standard factory fitted option for your car, then fitting them yourself later shouldn't make much difference. I insure with direct line and I think the standard policy for motors applies to vehicles of £30,000 or less, so given the value of your car (I guess now), putting, say 17" AMG alloys (a la 'sport') should not make a difference. The induction kit sends the wrong message to insurers and they are in their rights to up premiums and / or refuse. You might try increasing your excess by a substantial amount (as I did) as this can have a significant effect. If I remember, my excess is about £1,500 which helps compensate for the E14 postcode. When I bought my first car in 2000 (age 20yrs more than you) my first premium with zero no-claims was about £1,000 - again crap postcode E14. My advice would be to save and trade up later to a better car, rather than modifying the one you've got now.

Insurance is a joke.

Oh dear!!!!

I appreciate you want to take a pride in your car, but the induction kit in the grand scheme of things is not the be all and end all. Have you looked at any of the more 'standard' Mercedes-Benz optional alloys.

If you see some you like and they are not overly wide, then just explain that your original wheels .............. .......... (come up with a good idea), but not jazzy or performance related.

After all they will be standard fitting Mercedes-Benz options which could have been fitted when you 'purchased' the car?????

Good luck, and thanks for having a very sensible approach regarding insurance.

Regards,
John

When I told directline that I'd swapped my 16" sport alloys for some 17" AMG rims (I said I bought from the stealership) they didn't do anything to the premium. Same goes for the AMG styling pack, AMG exhaust, oem grill, w210 door mirrors etc. You name it! OEM mods rule! :)

Same here ... in Tesco's book anyway ... it really does depend on your insurance company though ... some will charge an admin fee just for noting a change to the policy, and others will charge a small amount just to be annoying !

I think what they're mostly worried about is finding the parts if you have an accident. If they're oem mods then it's easy for them.

Pietre has been told something similar as well (and he's old enough to be your Dad!).

£1,900 doesn't seem to bad at your age, at least the car must be worth more than the insurance! Better than £1,400 for an E Reg Nova.
When will you be 20 ? Make sure your renewal is just after your birthday and not a few months before.
I suggest a bit more restraint until you are 21, you'll save a lot ££££.

I'm 20 on 3rd November, so not too far off now. It kinda sucks, because it's more impressive being 19 and driving a Mercedes rather than 20 and driving a Mercedes... But I think I've opted for an annual policy rather than monthly so it doesn't seem I can cancel it anyway.

I think the girl I was talking to didn't know what she was talking about anyway, because she didn't know what and induction kit was and when I asked about the 18" alloys, there were a lot of "uh" and "um" going on.

Im 22, ive had mercedes since i passed my test at 17 and ive given up on moaning about insurance.

My quote had gone down from £6,600 to £3,200.

so , think yourself lucky

23 £430 Fully Comp Elephant with another named driver 24 :D :D

it's very good to see so many younger people driving Mercs .... makes us oldies (comparatively speaking!) less old farty :D ;) :D

God it feels good to be old.

32 and £500 fully comp for my 2004 320slk.

Had a C200 sport before this and it was only £100 cheaper to insure.

Had an Impreza P1 company car once, the insurance cost em £4000......they made me sell it.

Think i may consider a 36 as the next one then. Give it a couple of years insure will be about right. I am happy paying up to £1k

Having said that got an 04 Mini Cooper so the next step will be to get a cooper S :D :D That was coming out at just over a £1k to insure last march with elephant my mrs as policy holder 1 years no claims.

It must cost you about a grand a month to feed it though :D :D
You're right! I'd not even considered insurance on top of everything else (sticky buns etc), I'd better get back to saving up if I ever want an elephant of my own! ;) :D
