I am going to put a new steering wheel (new to me ), do i need to inform the insurance company. It is not a standard steering wheel but an upgrade, flat bottom and thumb grips.
Many thanks.

For your own sanity / protection, call your insurer and ask. Only they will be able to tell you with certainty.

As st13phil said.

Why provide your insured with a reason to invalidate your policy in case of a major claim?

Keep in mind that it is not only a straightforward saftey issue regarding the upgraded item, but a potential behavioural pattern issue.

An insurer can claim that their risk assessment shows that drivers who upgrade parts in their cars are more likely to make a claim, and because you did not provide them with this information they were not able to correctly assess the risk.

Make the call, and take a note of the date and time and the name of the person you spoke to.
